Failed BAR. Please help
The guy said I barely failed. I have an obd 1 b18b1 with stock exhaust manifold, stock cat, crust bent 2.25" exhaust with stock gsr muffler, and JDM b16 intake arm and box.
I just bought the car. I have checked the spark plug wires or distributor cap and stuff. It seems that the car misses a little bit in the 1500-2000 rpm range. Maybe it's the spark plugs or something causing it. Also, i think the b16 airbox is relatively small compared to the stock LS one. Maybe this is causing the car to run a bit rich? Maybe I should switch to stock LS intake. Also, the timing is perfectly TDC. I use 91 octane gas
Any help with this would be GREATLY appreciated.

Was the cat warmed up completely? If you do hear missing then change out the spark plugs, that could be the reason why you failed because your number didnt drop to much to be a cold cat.
i tried this for my beater and it passed with flyin colors
drain the tank down to almost empty...just b4 you gotta go back to retest, get sum higher octance juice in there 93 octane...maybe cupple gallons of cam2
a little bit of alcohol....and a small bottle of emmisions passer from autozone
limits here were like 800...scored a 900 and change so i failed
did this little trick and **** dropped to almost nothing something like 150
did the same thing for the carbon monoxide and all other hydrocarbons
but the other guy might be right too...make sure it's as tip top as it can be b4 going for ur retest
hope this helps

i recently had some trouble with my JDM B16 passing BAR. I was failing only the 15MPH NOx test. I adjusted the valves, and installed a better cat. the car passed with flying colors. I am speculating since both were done at the same time, but i believe that the better cat helped the most. Make sure it is warmed up properly before going, and leave the motor running when you get there.
maybe this will help too (from the magnaflow website...FYI...the cats i failed with were magnaflow, the one i passed with was a Miller Cat):

I say change the plugs and do a valve adjustment. Since the B16 doesn't use an EGR, it relys on overlap to help cool the chamber. This could explain the NOX issue. HC = unburnt fuel. With the cylinder temps being as high as they are, it could be the cause of the HC being high as well. Try new plugs and a valve adjustment.
I just passed my pretest a week ago.
here is what was done...
seafoam used in the intakemanifold, and in the oil ran the car around till it cleaned the motor out...
then changed oil, filter
air filter
spark plugs and cap/rotor
installed new cat (while i got the new cat installed i upgraded to 2.25 piping..)

All of this is really helpful. Thanks for the responses. I changed the sparkplugs a little while ago. The ones in there were really REALLY bad looking. It seems that my numbers were very close. I'm gonna try the retest with changing the sparkplugs/cap/rotor and seafoam the intake manifold. I think that maybe changing the cat maybe overkill. Plus, I don't really have the funds for it right now. If anyone thinks I should DEFINITELY change the cat though, maybe it'll be worth it. How much do muffler shops charge for cats plus installation?

What diameter magnaflow cat did you get? 2.25 also?
