Default B18C1, Smoke on accell, but compression good... What could it be?

I tested the compression on my B18C1 last week and the results were betweeen 221 and 225 across the board. That should be pretty good, right?

Well the car is eating about a quart of oil every other fillup (~600 miles). My girlfriend was following me today and said that there was light colored smoke coming out when I was pulling away from a stop.

I'm guessing because the compression was good that my rings are alright. The only thing left would be valve seals, right? but would leaky valve seals eat a quart of oil in 600 miles? That seams excessive to me..

I'm not familiar with the VTEC oiling system, or if it can contribute to this process, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm going to do a leakage test later this week and see what comes up.

it is a common vtec head problem

I have the same problem too. I was just wondering is it common for a gsr motor with only 70k miles to have this happen??

That's approximately the same mileage mine has.

I have 75k on mine and it goes through 1 quart of mobil1 5w30 every 1000kms. Compression and leakdown test on the motor were perfect. I dont know what it is at this point but it drives me nuts.

Do a leakdown. A compression test only tells a little bit of the story.

I highly doubt your valve seals are to blame.

I had the same problem, good compression approx 230 across the board but burned stupid amounts of oil, turned out to be the piston oil rings.

I don't have anything to tune the car with. It's bone stock with intake and exhaust. As far as I know it's got 70k miles on it.

I've been searching, and found that perhaps it's excessive crankcase pressure pushing oil past the oil rings. I'm considering getting an Endyn catch can system. We'll see how the leakage test turns out this week.

I had a friend follow me, and he told me he saw black smoke only when i hit vtec until redline. But when im just cruising along or down shifting theres nothing. But doesnt black smoke usually come with a rich fuel mixture not oil burning??He said he didnt see any kind of blue smoke or smell burnt oil.

Black smoke is fine... you're just running rich, which it is designed to do at WOT.

White/blue smoke is bad.

I have an LS and mine is doing the exact same thing (minus the vtec thing of course). However, on cold starts my motor knocks for about 3 seconds, which is why I'm thinking mine is valve seals (oil seaping past the valves when it sits and collecting inthe cylinder - and I have adjusted my valves 3 times just to be sure). I'm going to do a leak-down test later on today and see what the result is. If my rings are good then it's LS/VTEC time for me (time/money spent is about the same as getting the entire head re-done).

I forgot to mention that mine is drinking about a quart a tank!
