purpose of fog lights
if only the fog lights are on, are u suppose to see anything or can u only use them to see better during fog/rain situation? I just installed my fogs and i cant see anything with them on only at night. Thanks
By the way i know that the purpose what the main purpose of fogs is, but it was a custom install and i just wanted to make sure that i didnt mess it up. I know that fog lights are used in a foggy situation b/c it cuts through the fog and doesnt reflect like driving lights, u can see enough in the fog to stay in your lane and so the on coming car can see u.
The only reason I can't run with just my oem fogs alone is because they're yellow. My girlfriend's and my other friend's clear OEM's are bright enough to have no headlights.

fog lights will use a different kind of beam that will cut through rain/fog/snow. your regular headlights reflect off of these things so fog lights are a good thing to have in harsh weather. yellow fog lights will also serve to cut through rain/fog/snow better than blue/white bulbs.

Yes, the OEM fit better and usually have better lenses. Hence the high price tag.

I had some dumbshit with his fogs on behind me and they damn near blinded me.
Fogs should only be used when they will serve a purpose. Ie. in rain, fog, or snow.

true about the OEM fitment w/ higher priced oem fogs.
also, it depends what bulbs you have in there... just like normal headlights can have oem bulbs and it look like ***. pop some sylvania silverstars in there. and they look nice.

hmm...my sol has aux fogs, as well as the lower fogs...yellow like a ****..well I guess i don't have to worry about what' ahead of me at night/during the fog. I might go back to stock aux's though, because it's too much yellow.

Maybe not entirely true. There are certain laws that dictate and head light must such and such a distance above the ground (another way they get people for lowering their cars) Fog lights are typically mounted as low as possible to the ground. Fog normally sits a little about the ground, by mounting the fog lights as low as possible one hopes that the light will travel underneath the fog stratus and bounce back on any objects. Fog lights should be aimed almost parallel to the ground.
Head lights on the other hand are mounted higher than the fog lights and are aimed downwards towards the ground so as to not blind oncoming drivers. High beams being of course different.
I don't use OEM fog lights at all. I want my fog lights to really work in the fog. I use aftermarket big Bosch fog lights. I will, one day, post pictures of these. I find they are brighter, easier to aim, and have a very very good light distribution.
I just finished driving 400km so some very very thick fog. Do fog lights make a difference? Yes. However, they aren't a miracle, they won't let you see for miles through fog when head lights are useless, they just give you a slight advantage......but sometimes that's all you need. They once saved me from smoking a bear at 120kph.
I hope this helps,
Cheers.

Exactly right. I know here there are specific laws written about the lights that must be lit and their height above the ground, along with the usual laws about what color they must be.
If I remember high school science correctly, snow/fog/rain etc exhibits what is called the "tyndall effect" or something like that. What it means is that shorter wavelength light (e.g. white and blue) scatters more when it passes through snow/fog/whatever. Maybe this is why yellow works better, it's a longer wavelength of light. I think the idea behind fog lights is to mount them low so that the lower anngle involved scatters less light back into your eyes. Kinda like next time you're in a snowstorm, see how much light gets reflected back at you with your foglights as opposed to your high beams. Try not to try this if you're driving at all fast.

yellow bulbs in your foglights do absolutely nothing to help you see in the fog....nothing. fog hovers about 15" off the ground so the foglights being under the fog, light the ground. yellow is for looks and looks only.
