Default 93 vtec won't pass smog.

all stock except an intake. failed with my timing too advanced at 19 BTDC with a failed fuel cap leaking. Fixed my timing to the right spec. Was wondering if it makes a big different for incorrect timing to fail smog. thank

It can.

Advanced timing = hotter exhaust gas temperatures = higher NOx count.

cat is the big thing about emission. be sure you have a working cat and its not clogged/plugged.

Wait, what do they check in CA emissions? Do they actually check your timing? And did they put it on the dyno and sniffer? What parts did you fail?

Get a new fuel cap, fix the timing, and you should be okay.

Most definitely. Also, doublecheck your O2 sensor.

i just replace my o2 sensor couple of months ago. Cat is my concern, should i just buy those bolt on cat on ebay. they are around $100.

btw, i fail both 15 & 25 mph. Failed emission. Looks really bad.

IT'S PROBABLY NOT THE O2 SENSOR.

1. Get you LuDE back to OEM Timing Marks.
2. You can go to Sears, buy one..and return it after you use it. $40 bucks.
3. Just loosen bolts of distributor. and move the dizzy until mark is dead on. This would do for temp job.
4. I Live in CALI too. I hate it. I dream everynight of moving to a SMOG FREE STATE.
5. Check your cat.
6. Check EGR and PCV valves (buy or make an Oil catch can) bypass these two into the can. This will keep your engine clean.
7. check spark plugs. replace dizzy cap. if there's a lot of rust/ or oxidation. Bad sparks= Rich air/fuel = Smog.

8. GO TO a MUFFLER SHOP. CATS are like $60 bucks in Los Angeles. Free INstall. Mufflers are like $50. All OEM aftermarket. Just look up recyclers/ craigslist.org

there. !

how you you check the cat anyways? Can't really tell from inside the cat? or just by looking at the cat itself. Doing a dead on timing, mean by retard it all the way? it'll be good for temp but will fail timing check.

changes since last failed smog : replaced spark plugs (bosch platium 4), ignition wires, timing correction and fuel cap.

btw will the thermostat matters? recently my water coolant reserve bottle is over flooding. Tell me guys, is this my radiator is dirty or my thermostat needs to be change. The temp bars on dash light doesnt show that i'm overheating.

btw, will a after market high flow cat affect smog? Since its a high flow thought it'll not be good for smog test.

I saw this cat and was wondering if it'll fit directly to my stock exhaust, i know it's 2' inch. It saids there that this is a 2.5 outlet and inlet and saying it'll bolt with stock and aftermarket systems. here's the link to it :

i have a smog license, and you will never now if you pass unstill you fix the timing put a new gas cap and retested, if you didn't fail the emissions portion of the smog then you should be ok, but if the emissions are really close to limits you might fail. (You might, not for sure) Try retesting it and then see... if it fails than see what you have to do.. if it is HC it might be tune-up time, CO -- O2 sensor, air filter, map sensor (fuel related), NOX—Cat or EGR. Keep me posted ill be able to help you..

post the results, each category is different, ie high NOx your EGR may not be working right, high HC you could have exhaust leaks, etc.....
