Manually tension the belt and remove ALL of the slack.
You want to do this with the engine hot as well so that you dont get any
overly excessive tension. Keep in mind this will cause more wear on the cams,
#1 upper main bearing, tensioner and water pump. But hey, you want power right?
This is especially important if you turn high rpm. This is why i dont bend valves
in case some of you were wondering. When you mishift the timing changes
and then you bend valves. This way there is no way the timing can change
because there is -0- slack.

more wear? would that mean the no tension setup would be bad for a street car?
I do regular maintenance, and extra maintenance on a regular basis.
Once again, this is one of those things you have to do. If you are squeamish,
then stay with stock parts.
sgt-I would assume this would contribute to causing the timing belt to snap due to it being stretched real tight? I assume when you say maintenance you change your timing belt frequently?

timing belt it WILL happen. Its just a matter of time.
I use a power belt. so far it seems to be holding up very well.
when i say maintenance, i mean the following:
check main and rod bearings
check oil pump
check cams
check tensioner
check water pump
check timing belt
theres more, but i dont remember right now.
