Default Car spits gas out of the gas cap.

Yeah, so my 91 CRX spills gas out of where you fill it. I did not overfill it, intentionally or by accident. Actually, I probably underfilled it last time, because I read 49.7 MPG with a DOHC ZC and DX trans (285 mi on 5.8 gal).

Anyway, I brought it out and drove the crap out of it just to be sure it wasnt overfilled. I got back, and when I took the cap off, gas spilled out of the 2 holes on either side of the main fill hole. Needless to say, I put that **** back on real quick. It did it multiple times.

Now, the only known problems I have is that the longer the car sits, the harder it is to start, and the idle sucks (eventually makes its way down to 500 rpm. Anybody have any insight? It sounds like the charcoal canister\whatever relieves pressure to the gas tank is stuck closed.

Edit: It also smells badly of gas in my car. This just started today, when the other problem did.

sounds like a bad seal. take year interior off on driver side rear. you can look at some of the seals there.

also maybe your gas cap seal is bad.

Hopefully its not corroded fuel piping.

What is causing this though? What seal is doing what? The gas is literally shooting out of the 2 little holes because its being forced out.

your fuel system is pressurized. that would explain drop of rpm (fp would drop decreasing fuel getting into the engine), also why you smell fuel in your car (ie fuel is leaking into your cabin), it would also explain why fuel is coming out of those 2 holes (thats probably where the leaking seal is).

um not sure what else to tell you man. its most likely a seal or the tubing.

My idle has been doing this ever since the swap though, it didnt just start like the smell and the overflowing gas

Could it be that its just overfilled? I get sick whenever I get in the car because of the smell. I'll try running the gas out and see if that helps, and i'll also look at the seals.

At one point, the gas came up through the fill tube. This is weird

As in recently, myself? No, I havnt. Tomorrow I'm going to check to see if the one that runs to the charcoal canister is clogged. Or if its the canister itself, my friends crown vic sucked some gas into the charcoal caniester and it did some of the same things.

Edit: There is more of a hiss when I take the gas cap off than usual. This supports my theory that whatever releves the excess pressure from the tank is clogged.

lol.. did you drive your car before you wrote this? you said in your first post that you didnt overfill it. so thats not it.. even if you did over fill it it wouldnt do that. iv over filled a few times to make the price even at the pump and this has never happened to me.

I drove from Cary to Charlotte, where I go to school, and I filled up right as I got into Charlotte. But like I said, 5.8 gallons. I drove my car down to where I needed like 8 before.

Isnt the charcoal canister to help with the air and the vacuums? mainly for emisions in the ca's.. I doubt thats your problem but hey unless im wrong, right?

I did a Wire tuck on mine i run without a charcoal canister, i do however have a exhaust smell, im not sure from what.... if i can run without it, it must not have much to do with pressure

Everything seems to be in order, I took a quick look today. It stopped shooting gas out of the fill spot, though, so thats good. The smell of gas isnt as strong either.

Sounds to me like you emptied it too far last time, and you got air in the return feed line.

I made the same mistake last summer. It was pouring over the side of the car. Make sur the cap seals properly and you'll be okay to drive. In my case while I was watching it pour out and cleaning off the car, air from the return line gushed out, fuel level dropped to normal...problem solved.

That's normal. There is always pressure in the tank. You use gas, the level drops pressure changes, you get vacuum. Pop the cap, and it'll hiss.

Both of my EF's do the exact same thing. I have a '90 CRX SI with a B16 and it does it. I also have a bone stock '91 DX Hatch and it has just started doing it. I actually just walked outside to check it again and it had done it. I wish there was a write-up or something or a really good explanation as to why this is happening.
