Default clutch issues: Should I be able to do this?

My ride: 1989 Civic LX with JDM d15z1 and CRX HF transmission. Engine came with a clutch and flywheel, which I'm using. Told by importer engine had less than 60k on it, so I assumed the same to be true for the clutch.

While driving and with my foot off of the gas I am able to take the car out of gear without pushing in the clutch pedal. I am NOT able to put it in gear without pushing in the clutch pedal however.

I could swear that every car I've had in the past wouldn't let me do this, so it's kind of freaking me out. Should I be able to put the car into neutral while driving without pushing the clutch pedal? If not, what could be wrong?

Oh, and please don't say I'm going to need a new clutch. I'll cry crocodile tears if I do.

I just ask these questions so people like you can feel superior. Glad I was able to accomplish my goal.

it has to do with the gears in the trans being cut at an angle instead of straight cut, like older domestics were. shifting out of gear to neutral is fine, not using the clutch to go into gear thats a problem.
