Default piston/valvetrain or tranny upgrade?

well this is a little disappointing.... i raced an i/h/e modded da (i hope he at least had a b17vtec or modded ls/vtec motor) and did so-so (split 2 races). i was pulling on him hard in 3rd gear but lost the first race, won the 2nd race pulling away from him in 3rd again. 1st race got killed by 1.5 carlengths off the line, second was better, but still got beat off the line a little bit. my setup:

-ls/vtec in ek
-s2 im
-stock block, stock head
-ls tranny
-usual i/h/e
-vtec chipped p06 (not tuned yet)
-185/60/13 marshall "performance" wannabe tires

after reading butloads of threads on ls/vtec setups, i was excited/inspired to try it myself. but i can't say im not disappointed i didnt do any better.

i have a little money coming up and i am seeking advice on how i should spend it......

i had planned for a piston/bearing/cam/valvetrain upgrade, but now i am wondering if id be better off getting a better tranny first? i hate this ls tranny.....

sorry for the long post.... thanks h-t.....

you shifted your powerband up with a vtec head but your still using a LS tranny. that is the obvious glaring weak spot i see. my vote goes for a b16 or at least a GSR tranny if you can with an LSD.

the second thing would do would be new pistons, bearings, arp rod bolts/headstuds whole 9 for the bottom end.

then after that your ready for cams.

even if he had a stock ls/vtec you should have been even considering the weight of both cars....but sometimes it depends on the driver...did he sound like he was shifting gears earlier than you maybe changed his into a b16 or gsr.....just change your tranny to a b16 or gsr with a ls 5th gear and you should be good...but if you had the money i would build up the block

i was thinking that's where i should probably go also...... so you think that the tranny upgrade will make a bigger difference than upgrading the bottom end and valvetrain? thanks for your input bro.....

well, he got me off the line both times ( first time i admit i had a shitty launch, 2nd time did better, but he still got me off the line). but i was able to pull on him real hard in 3rd gear.

i was thinking that too since he was shifting earlier than i was, and im shifting before 8krpm. stock block.....

man i was really thinking i should have been able to take this guy even with a lightly modded motor, but i guess a better set of tires would've helped there....?

n e way, thanks for your input too....

get some b16 pistons or if you have the money get some forged ones and some arp rod bolts so you can rev higher and mate it with a itr tranny with lsd...and you should be able too take him...but remeber this as you improve your motor the guy with the da could have also soo you never know....
