Default Cooling/Rad/Temp Guage Problems

Heres the deal. I just swapped a 95 GSR b18c into my 94 del sol. Before I swapped the motor the temp guage ran about 1/4 of the way up. Now it goes right up to half and stays there no matter what. I dont think its right though cuz the motor seems to be running very hot. The fan also never turns on, but im pretty sure that it didnt work before the swap either. Ive changed the radiator, thermostat and fan so im sure its none of those things. Im wondering if the water pump could be bad. How can you tell if its working? It seems to me that if it wasnt the car would overheat very quickly. thanks for the help in advance.

a little under half way on the factory gauge is normal. i would say the thermostat in your old motor was probably stuck open not letting it warm up completely.

if you are worried about it get a mechanical gauge.

the fan doesnt have to come on if the temperature isnt too high. i have seen cars idle in 90° weather for an hour and the fan not come on.

Yah. Mine was like that for a while and come to find out that I had an electrical problem. I had a shredded ground wire to/from the fan which caused it to turn on and off at odd times. The funny thing was I never overheated.

Coolant could possibly not be circulating so I would test your water pump by rotating it left to right and seeing if it moves freely without any force. But you have to take the crankshaft pulley off and covers off then loosen the adjustment bolt to take the timing belt off. I think in that order. Other than that do you have leaks? Then put hose clamps on all you coolant lines and heater hoses.

yeah I just changed the timing belt and the water pump seemed fine. Ill check the ground wire from the fan.
