strange starter issue (91 dx)
91 dx mpfi swap...5speed....
Recently when I switch the ignition to start ( III) all I get is one click and no engaging of the starter gear, nor are there multiple clicks(such as from a dying battery).
I have replaced the original starter which I had working for 1 year in the car ( has an oversize battery and b18 alternator that i thought was killing the solenoids..but thats not the case)
THe new one resulted in the same issue so i got another brand new one, which worked when tested at the shop.
There are 2 connections on the starter, one positive directly from the battery which after testing with a test light definately has power. The next one is the smaller switched positive source which lit the test light up the entire duration of when switched to ignition to start.
- also when i removed the starter from its normal location..just to expose the gear..when u try to start...the click also comes from just the gear coming out..but not spinning(usually the case..sometimes no click).
Ok so that concludes; it cant be the starters at fault
- checked the fuses and they are all fine
- i havent checked the starter relay as im not sure how to do so
what does the relay look like..and where is it located...under the drivers side dash...is it??? the cylinder(clear) dark plastic piece with 2 wires going to it or is that the main relay.....or is it another small black box looking thing under dash...
any input would be appreciated as i have been push-starting my car for the last 2 weeks

that could definately be so...as when they test it at the stores they ground it ..however isnt it internally grounded through the battery...as in there is no "actual" ground hookup on the starter itself but rather the bolts touching the starter going through the block act as a ground?

It's actually a dead ground to the car, not in the harness. The ground from your tranny (usually the clutch lever bracket) to the body is gone. Replace, and all will be good.

Ok heres an update;
-I tested the battery and its showing according to my multimeter.. 14.98 volts
-Then i tested the voltage of that one positive lead going to the starter and its at 14.96 or so.
-I then tested the switched 12v lead that goes to the starter. WHen i switched the ignition on the multimeter would register at 14.68 volts.
- I also brought the starter that just "clicks" once when the ignition is on and the starter gear just pops out rather than spinning....
AND at the auto store it was tested and results came back as "GOOD" as well as me observing the starter gear popping out and spinning like its supposed to be...so therefore solenoid isnt fried
conclusion.
1.) -wiring to the starter appears 100% functioning properly as well as the ground from the clutch linkage to the frame is in tact
2.) - battery is in perfect condition
3.) - after testing it in the auto shops, all starters that didnt work in the car test well and all work
4.) whaT in the world could the issue be?

whohoo...i fixed it. AFter looking at the small things and testing and testing. I noticed that from the positive battery cable terminal on the part with the 2 smaller bolts, I had my power wire for my amp on the bottom and the wire going to the starter...on the top of it(dont get mad at me...i bought it like that
)
ANyways...so even though i tested the wire and it WAS getting power, the amp wire was mounted so it received more (greater amp/current)..so im not sure which word to use.
Either way i disconnected the amp power wire from the terminal and connected the one lead that goes to the starter...and it started
