Is it legal?
hey everyone, ive been looking at swapping in a B20 into a crx i just picked up, and i was wondering if it wwas a legal swap? Im in california.
Ive heard as long as the motor is out of a newer car than you have (which it would be) then you're ok, but ive also heard that you cant swap a truck motor into a car (B20's came in CRV's so technically its an SUV motor)
anyone have any insight? i dont want to swap a motor in just to find out i cant drive it.

get your car smogged before you drop in the motor...you wont even get to the emissions test with that motor...as soon as he sees that its a b20 you will fail the visual...you cant legally run a truck motor in a car

a b18 will pass as long as it can pass the emissions...
is there currently no motor in your car?
if there is, just smog it with the single cam and swap the b20 in after

The thing is to be an engine exchange it has to be offered by the Manufacture as an option in the car.
Your B18/B20 would have to get a bar sticker from a bar referee. It is not impossible but usually a pain in the ***.
You have to have all emissions equipment that came stock with that motor in the car and the ecu for the motor too.
As for the Floridan just wait it will be there soon. No I am not kidding.

Yeah but then he will have to buy a new CRX each time a hurricane passes by.

Here is the number for the referee scheduling center - 1-800-622-7733
I haven't called them yet so that is all the info I have for them.

The simplest thing to do would be to install a B18A, which would still be an OBD0 engine. Get that through the referee. (it's not that hard, I have a ref'd B18C in my 89 hatchback)
Then swap in the B20. Keep the B18 in the garage.
When you have to go in for your normal smog check, just swap the B18 back in for the check.
And the answer to if a B20 is legal in a car; NO!

The first generation of B20A engines was available in the 86-87 Prelude 2.0SI in Japan, the 86-89 Honda Vigor and Accord . It leaned towards the front of the car just like the A20A engine found in the same cars. This B20A produces 160 hp and 140 ft·lbf torque
The second generation of B20A was found in the 88-91 Prelude. The 88-91 Prelude B20A and B21A blocks are cast so they lay at an 18-degree angle leaning towards the firewall. This was done to please the exterior specifications for the 1988-1991 3rd Generation Prelude due to its ultra-low hoodline which Honda dubs the "engineless design"
surely this would allow you a way round that law as in the jap market they were available in ludes....

The b20 and b18 are supposedly identical correct me if im wrong, wouldn't you just swap a b20 and put a b18 valve cover on it?. I mean how is a b18 gonna pass emissions any better if the motors are the same and the same setup with ecu is being used...if anything since the b20 is newer it would run better then a ole b18 junker.

The blocks are stamped not the valve cover.

Just about every swap needs to be bar'd in Cali...technically. Of course this depends on whether or not the technician cares. On a B series it's kind of obvious it's a swap, also the most common on our cars. Seems like more than half of the CRX's for sale in cali have a B series swap in them. Very few people have their swap bar'd though which is a big issue and is likely a reason for the sale. Go for a B18 swap and get it bar'd, then you can swap the engine, etc. Perhaps the techs won't care if it's a B18 or B20 once they see the bar label. Of course, it also has to pass on the dyno.
b20b= crv motor cant be a truck motor no to this if you want it legal.
b18b= integra non vtec motor bingo smogable and you can ref it.
do the b18b swap ref it and your set do it right and you wont get harrassed by the cops or the ref. j/k they still will punk you even if you have carb exempt parts.
god i love cali i love my sohc zc too never get in trouble cops look at it wierd lol
