That sounds like a bigger problem than just syncros. If you keep your hand on the shifter when you gently get on the gas is if forced out of gear? or does it just slip out?

2nd has done that to me a couple of times and I figured that I didnt get it in gear all the way. if your syncros were bad you would have trouble getting the tranny to shift INTO 4th, not slipping out.

The only thing that I can think of is that 4th gear itself may be worn. Does it do it every time?

Its your gear. You must have been grinding your 4th gear a lot. Becuz wat happens is when you grind your gear, the synchro tries to lock on but really its just chipping away at your gear. Then the next time you put it into 4th correctly the synchro cant lock on thus creating it to slip or pop out. Looks like your gonna need a tranny rebuild. sorry if the explanation is unclear.

The only way to fix a worn gear is to replace it. get a quote at a trannmission shop and then find out how much it would be to get a good used tranny. I say this b/c if you have a Dseries you can probably get a good used tranny for less than the cost of rebuilding the one you have.
