Default Problem. Speedometer not moving

92 honda prelude f22a. Recenlty my speedometer (if that is spelled right) stopped moving. If I drive for awhile it will eventually start. Does this have anything to do with my throttle postioning sensor. Another thing. When i make a hard stop. By this I mean hitting the brake P.D.H. the check engine light comes on. Does anyone have any insight ?

Check out the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) on the tranny. That's where the speedometer gets the signal from and they commonly have problems. Use the search feature to find many threads with lots of information.

in my crx when the VSS was unplugged i would get a CEL code for it when i braked hard, so that's probably why it comes on. The sensor might be busted, maybe the VSS itself, unplugged harness, or a break in the wire. Find the VSS, make sure it's connected first. I'm sure there is a way to check the sensor out too, maybe if I get bored i'll psot it on here, but only if you promise to be good.

ok i got bored, here's what you do:

1. Find the VSS, it's on the back of the tranny, it has 2 small hoses going into the side from the steering rack, and a harness on the top with 3 wires.

2. Take out the 10mm bolt connecting it to the tranny

3. Pull out the VSS

4. Turn the car to the ON position.

5. Spin the gear on the bottom with a multimeter attached to ground on the neg side, and on the pos side, plug it in to each of the 3 wires as you spin it.

6. If none of the 3 record a 12V signal, you may have a blown fuse or a break in the wire. Check that.

7. If one (and only one) records a signal. You've got a bad VSS.

8. If you get a pulsating signal from one wire. The sensor's fine, you've got a bad connection or ECU.
