Default vtec engagement with vafc

I'm running an si tranny right now in my 91 d15b crx and the speedo is broken inside the tranny. Since my speedo isn't working, neither is vtec. In this situation, can I use a vafc to make vtec engage?? Would it run too lean?? This would just be temporary until I have the time to pull my tranny and get the old speedo out. I've never used a vafc before, I just basically want vtec to work until I have time to fix it. Any other way to rig something up for the time being? Thanks
