OT- glad i have a light civic hatch and 2 crx's
well i went to the dealership yesterday to test drive a new SI. i wasn't expecting much because i knew it wasn't gonna be that fast but anywayz. I pull up in my hatch and all the guys are like, " look its a street racer" and **** cracking jokes and i just walked over to the SI. i looked in it and the salesman proceeded to tell me " this thing has 200 horses and let me tell ya it goes" and i just looked at him and said" um no this thing has 160 horses and we will see how fast it is". well he didn't like that and asked me how fast my car was being the fact it was gutted and all and i told him my times. well anywayz he got me the keys to the thing and i started it and let it warm up so vtec would kick it. he asked me why i was sitting there and i told him why and he said" i have never heard of that" . the whole time i thinking to myself : man this guy has GREAT product knowledge:. Anyways i finally take off in the car and i am going to an interstate and i go to get on it and this my friends is why i didn't buy one nor would i buy one. It felt like riding in a HF crx with the a/c on. This car was so damn slow i couldn't believe it. I even turned the a/c off from the get go to get the most of the experience. All i have to say is that i am pretty sure honda has lost its touch in the import world now with this car. the thing was as slow as a hurd of turtles running thru molasses in the winter time , it looks like a focus, you can feel how heavy it is and it redlines at 6800. i couldn't believe it. the only people i would think would buy this car are people that have no freakin clue and just see the word VTEC on the side. i was really let down by this car but at the same time made me feel good to know that my 1k car with a crx si engine could spank a brand new 20k civic si so with that, leaving the dealership brought a smile to my face.
just wanted to let you guys in on my day
i wanna add something. Everyone has been ranting and raving about all these new cars coming out and all this and everyone of the NEW tuner cars are slow and heavy. It was a shock to me about the new nissan, slow also. the RX wasn't inpressive. I am glad that i own a 91 hatch and 2 88 crx's. I can't belive people would go out there and pay 20-27k for a new car that i can pull up next too in my 1k civic and blow its doors off. just wanted to let you guys know that

yeppers got my car for 800$. did extensive body work to it (rust... freeking damn rust!) lil gutting some bolt ons and i lose to 89 supra turbos by 1 carlength (a hatch car length). the fact that they tried to tell you it was 200hp is halarious. "Ya think you can handle all 200 pnoies baby?" lol what a bunch of typical salemen. i stay FAR away from dealerships. sleezy, dishonest and expensive as all hell.
i'm gonna add stuff about this car because the slowness was the worst part but the car had things going for it. the ergonomical gear shifter was neat. it took a minute to get used to but other than that it felt right and it was easier to shift without throwing your arm all the down to your side and then back. The car was quiet, i mean all you could hear was the engine and certain rpms and there was no road noise. The seats were comfy and the interior was laid out pretty nice. The SI only comes with one kinda interior, you can make no adjustments with that. The car only comes in 4 colors also in which i drove a white one but i like the silver one the most. The car road very well, smooth thru the rpm's .I didn't road race the car while i test drove it so i can't say anthing about handling or brakes really except the brakes felt good though when i used them for normal stopping. the car has everything else but power really. i still wouldn't buy it but that might answer some of your questions
Well I think Hasport might have a solution...they are developing a mount kit to drop in the 200 hp rsx type-s motor into the new civic Si. That just might help out in the power department....but it is going to be super expensive to source a K20 from the RSX.
You just need the head from the Type S, from what I hear it bolts up. Best bet is the 2.4 from the CRV and the Type S head. Actually, the best bet is a CRX and a turbo B18C or a 92-95 hatch with a turbo H22! Either of those setups is much cheaper and ridiculously faster.

It's not always about speed. The new Si--while slow, still has Honda quality, a full warranty and is brand new.
If I was worried about overall speed, I'd have a 87 Mustang LX 5.0 and blow everyone's doors off for about $2500. A gutted 90 Civic hatch will appeal to a different audience than a brand new $20K Si. From a professional standpoint, there is no way some people could drive a gutted hatch. A new Si will still allow them to have a 'sporty' Honda with full amenities.
I don't like the new Si either because Honda is getting further away from its roots. Maybe they'll see that when sales (hopefully) don't meet their expectations. But then again, that's what the R version is for. Who knows if we'll see that though.

Exactly. If speed was the only need, I could buy an 80' Mustang, drop in a 460, and run 11's for about 3 grand! It's the style and the feel of the car that really matters.... CRX's and Civics just feel fast and connected to the road... hopefully Honda doesn't stray too far from it's root. BTW, killing the Prelude was a BIG mistake. But for all you people who have little faith in Honda's new cars, look at the S2K.

I still can't get over the fact that the Civic Si has the same motor as the slow RSX, and it actually weights 50lbs more. That's just disgusting and disturbing at the same time

i'm tired of this retarded BS....a 'vtec kick' is not the best thing next to sliced cheese. the reason you don't FEEL it in the new Si is because Honda has FINALLY made a SMOOOOOTH engine band. everybody that knows anything about mechanics knows that an instant increase in HP is not a good thing. just cuz it doesn't 'kick' at a certain point doesn't mean jack crap. it's called torque friend. when you have it it doesn't 'kick' you..it's just smooth and how things should be. people claiming the new Si is slow when they drive a slow car
(yeah, i doubt your HF is freakin fast with an Si engine)
*start the flame war..i'm talking bad about the girl on the site
*
torque is what it's all about..having a smooth powerband. it might not *feel* fast cuz it doesn't 'kick', but when you look down and you're doing 80, it's nice having a smooth engine.

to the wrx.About nissans new Z, i kinda like it. 14.0 in the quarter isnt that bad either.
When i heard Honda was gonna bring an SI hatch back to the states months back, i was kinda exited. That is until i saw it... the looks kinda killed it for me.
These days cars are more efficient, and making more power. Its just sad that they use that as an excuse to add a few hundred pounds.

I'll take a reasonably quick car with a SLIGHT jump in torque at ~5000rpm over a slow pos with no jump in torque any day.
I'm not even going to mention the Macpherson struts, cable shifter, hundreds of extra pounds, and a crappy engine.....
The point is they are moving away from what got us liking Hondas in the first place, and towards what the crappy driver who doesn't give a rat's *** about actually driving the car (just watch some of their commercials).
Next thing you know, Honda will put an 8 liter V8 with a whopping 165 hp and 500lb-ft of torque in their Civics
