i have the same exact question. What did you finally decide to do? Anyone else care to chime in on this topic?

The head i snagged from the junkyard DEFINITELY needs to be hot tanked.. I just want to know if i have to remove the entire valvetrain, or if i can just drop it in as it sits.. valves and springs and cam and all.

Anyone also care to comment on the cost? i know hot tanking is not that expensive, but if the head needs to be dissasembled, should i get it done at the shop? or should i dissasemble it myself and then take it in?

ROFL @ laziness.

hottanking is for disassembled heads. so you can start off with a clean base when rebuilding.

my main issue is not laziness but in cost of the operation.. I dont want to pay a shop for anything i can do before or after the hot tank, but since i have never done this before, there are some questions i have about it.

the questions i have are:

1. do i need to pay the shop to re-seat the valves? or as long as i keep everything in the right order i dont have to worry about it. As far as i can tell, it does not appear that any of the valves are bent.

2. i intend to replace valve guide seals as well, is this something i can do, or should the shop do it?

I can afford to buy any hand tool that would be required to do the job, so pretend that isnt an issue. I would rather pay to have the tool then pay the machien shop to do the work for me, if at all possible.

sorry for all the noob questions, but i dont really have anyone around me that i can ask questions like this to.. so i have to ask H-T...
