An alarm is only as good as its install. Find a very good installer and have a cheapo alarm installed and it would be better than having a 500 dollar alarm installed by some random person.

A good installer will hide the brain in a good spot, tuck the wires in into existing looms and make it look like nothing was ever touched. So if someone were to break into your car they wouldn't be able to locate your alarm and just bypass it. Some jackass could just have all your wires exposed and have your brain in an obvious spot which can be easily bypassed.
I would make sure that everything is hidden well, mount the siren in a very hard to get to area, and also possibly get a backup/additional siren which is self powered.
Im also saying this from experiance because i got my alarm installed poorly and regretted it and had to go back and hide everything correctly and work out a few bugs with the alarm system.

just had it done
got the viper 3000
i think they did an alright job, they didnt install the new LED blue light though,
just be picky and say that you want the brain tucked up in there and if you have an existing alarm say you want all the wiring and everything in a back cause you are selling it. so that way they dont use the existing wiring and half *** it.

I will definitely be one to say that it will all depend on the installer you get. Some installers understand your concern, others wont give a damn since they're more concerned with quickly finishing the job.
As eg4usdm mentioned, talk to the installer and let him know you would like the brain hidden in a spot thats not typically used in your vehicle. Dont let them hide it in the kick panel or zip tied to the ignition harness. thats just bullshit.
They may charge you custom labor fees to put it behind the cluster, or Climate Control, depending on their skills. If its reasonable, i say just do it. But Check the work after the fact, just to make sure you didn't get cheated. If you do, have a manager get involved and if needed, get a refund. I know many people have their views on the installers at best buy, but there are still some that care.

I agree, speak to the installer. Also consider tipping the installer before the install to see if you can persuade him to put in the extra effort.

well they could clip the wires to the horn or the speaker or whatever you wanna call it so its not going off all loud and **** so people around it can here, but once they get inside they have to find the brain so they can start it and whatnot, if your alarm were to have all the features.
the guy who installed mine was mid 20's but he was a honda guy he has a 97 prelude with mods n what not we BS'd afterward about stuff apparently he has like stage 2 skunk cams and he did new rockers and springs so i was a little comforted that he was a fello honda member and knew my concerns.
i would have loved to get my alarm done by that guy at the other shop that had 35 years experience but they didnt seemed too concerened getting my service after he knew i had a acura.....
so just make sure that the installer has experience, i asked questions like who's installing it, if anything happens to the exterior/interior theyll pay for it and where they were placing the brain and what kind of experience you had to have to install the alarm.
just ask as many questions as possible and let them know that your not some kid getting a fake *** alarm cause you like the noise it makes when you arm it

Once they get into the car, its common to pop the hood and cut the siren. If you try to re create the event, it should take no more than a few seconds.
To try and make the situation a bit tougher, add multiple sirens in the vehicle. Mini piezo sirens are somewhat loud, can be placed anywhere, significantly smaller, and dont cost too much. Adding 3 or 4 sirens to your vehicle in places that are more time consuming to find might help your efforts in deterring theft.

First I would take it back and tell them that you want a back-up battery added to your alarm. This is really a must. And is really the first this that should be installed with any alarm. 100% of the time the theif just pops your hood and cut your battery and siren. With the back-up battery, it keeps the alarm powered and your kill switches active depended on how its wired. And can also power a second siren hidden in or thru out the car. I would also recommend atleast 2 or 3 killswitches and add layers of security- ie club-footlock and such. I strongly recommend adding a gps tracking unit with a early system. So if your car is moved or the alarm is set off it will call a phone or pager to let you know. And if the car was started or driven away you can shut it off from the phone or internet. Plus you get real time tracking of the car via the internet.

Also the alarm is as only as good as the install. If you can shut your alarm in 2 min a theif can do it 1.
