A/C retro-fit to R-134
Ok, here is the problem:
this is long....
I have a '90 teg for a daily driver and when i bought the car the a/c was blowing warm. So i have retrofitted three cars now in the past and i figured this would be easy too. So i took the new valve stem that you screw onto the exisiting valve stem and screwed it on like you are suppose to. I then hooked the hose up and got a can to start filling...well nothing happend....found out the stem was missing a piece fom the inside. The can didn't empty at all so i decided to go by another stem. I was able to convince Autozone to open a recharge kit box and give me the valve out of there b/c it seemed to be the only on that fits. I go home, screw that one on and retry to fill it. It finally fills but takes about a half hour for one can....not right. Well the a/c was blowing cold and warm...it would be blowing cold and then randomly blow warm and i have no idea why. I only put one can in and that was about a month ago. I went out of town last week and the car just sat while i was gone. I came back and the a/c blew nothing but outside air. I then went to good old autozone again to get another can with stop leak and refrig mixed in one. I tried to fill it and nothing happend at all this time...the can didn't empty one bit. I took the valve off again and it was all f-ed up and wouldn't let the freon through. I again asked autozone for a new vavle and this time they said no. I then asked if this was even the correct valve and they said they couldn't tell me b/c they had no idea. I then came home and decided to just empty the rest out of the lines so when i figure out how what piece i need it will be ready to go. The first 3 sec of emptying was freon and the last 30 sec was nothing but hot *** air....why? So the main question i have after all this crap is what valve piece do i need? There has to be a certain size or something. Can anyone help me here?
Thanks

i personally work at autozone and those stems and r-134's are horrible, customers come in and complain all the time how the things dont work and how the can's dont even let air out.
Stay away from stop-leak. You'll probably end up clogging alot of the tiny holes in parts like the expansion valve and condersor. Also, i'd change the actual valve steams inside the cars r-12 fittings. That turned out to be my only leak but using the stop-leak had ruiined my whole a/c system.
I used to work for autozone, can't even begin to tell you how many customers came in and complained about the retrofits damaging their cars. But when I got to investigating the situtation, it turns out the customers didn't change orifice tube, or the R-12 was still in the system, black death had already occured, or one of many other possible problems with the system before even trying to retrofit. Anyways, best thing to do would be to get a good a/c hose kit and measure low, and high side lines. Low side should be about 40-55 psi depending on ambient temp. and high should be around 300-340 psi again depending on temp. If low side is extremely high, then you most likely have a clogged line, probably orifice tube.

what is freeze-12 and how hard is it to get and install?
