Default Another "My car won't start" thread

EDIT

Okay I have a '00 GSR. The car has been having problems starting for the last few weeks. It all started when I had the car sitting in my backyard for 3 weeks waiting on my new radiator to come in. It was 95º+ the whole time. After putting the new rad. in I swapped the battery and got it started. I took it to Advanced and had them test the alt. and starter, they both tested fine. I also have a broken FPR (the top valve where the hose goes from the FPR to the IM is broken) but it will be replaced tomorrow when I finally have a day off work.
Now the way I figure if the FPR was the reason it wasn't starting then it would never start, but sometimes it does. It might be fine for 3 or 4 days then it won't start for a week. When I do get it started it drives like ****. It sputters real bad (broken fpr) it feels like it is cutting out. Also when I try to start from a stop I have to launch at 4K RPM's or it will die.
Now I know some of my problems are caused by the fpr. The only other thing I can come up with is the main relay could be going bad and I am going to check that tomorrow for broken solder. The ignitor might be bad, but I just replaced that in January of '06. Someone else said my ignition timing might be off. As soon as I can get it started and get it to the Honda stealership my buddy will shoot the timing for me. Like I said I have a brand new battery and the alt. and starter are testing fine.
What do you think it might be? TIA

edit: sometimes when trying to start the car when it won't start, after I let the key back the intake arm will shake and make a gurgle type sound and then a pretty good size puff of smoke will come out of the air filter. Someone told me that that might be ignition timing.

I don't think either of those will cause the car not to start. As far as the O2 goes, I am OBDI so I only have one to worry about.

I have an extra one so I will try that tomorrow.

map sensor will just make it idle hella rough.

this guy has problems.....sounds like timing is 180 degrees out or cat is stopped up. if not one of those two possible fuel filter stopped up.

Well I will change the fuel filter tomorrow, and check timing. And will probably swap to a test pipe (I don't car it's illegal so is my suspension, OBDII-OBDI conversion amongst other things, and I don't have emissions here.)

check all your connections. plugs, wires, possibly loose grounds. might have accidently pulled something. check timing if its super sluggish and you have to rev high just to get the car rolling.

I checked the timing belt and it feels fine. The belt and water pump were replaced in January of this year. It was done by a friend of mine who is a mechanic at honda

how does timing "feel fine" did you do the checks i told you last night? did you unrestrict your exhaust to rule out possible clogged catalytic convertor??

By the timing I meant the timing belt had good tension. I changed the fuel filter, plugs and FPR. The car is now starting no problem. It is running good untill I get to about 8K-8500K then it sputers (I am chalking that up to needing a tune). It's pulling pretty good now. Timing will be shot on Monday when I can take it to the Honda stealership. I didn't check the main relay because, if that was it it wouldn't start at all, right? I didn't check the timing, (what you said to do) because if it was 180 out it wouldn't start at all.

I've got the same problem with my 94 GSR (I hope) because I bought a new
distributor and waiting for it to arrive.

What did that run for you installed?

I don't know too much about pricing yet.

TAN

Well, I had it towed to the only place I would let my car out of my sight, let alone leave it overnight and know I will come back to my car the way I left it. It cost me
$346.65 for parts, labor, and tax. At least it's fixed.
