Default Clutch problems

Well I own an 88 CRX than I'm fixing up and I guess I should tell you everything I've done to it so far, it might help..

First off it came with the D16 but the engine was knocking bad. I do plan on swapping the engine sometime in the future but I don't have the money right now and need a car to get to and from work, etc. so I decided to just go to the junkjyard and pick up something from there. I found a D15 off another CRX and just used that.

It worked fine and everything but a couple days later I was drving and all of a sudden my clutch let go. If I tried to engage the clutch in gear nothing would happen. I would just hear spinning. It happened pretty suddenly and I just saw my RPM drop.

So I thought maybe my clutch just burnt out so I replaced that and it worked fine for anotther couple days.

Anyways I replaced the transmission, also from the junkyard. Got it off a D15 civic HB. As I went for a test drive, a couple laps around my block the same thing happened. I would here kind of a pop or thud and the clutch wouldn't grab. So took the tranny down and it was burnt.

Again, I replaced it and not even half an hour of driving it...yup you guessed it. It let go. I checked the adjustment after every drive and it was fine. Could it be something with the clutch cable?

also switching gears is no problem. With the car on and off.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Please help...

Great forums BTW. I would check through the threads but it is to late and have work in the morning so if there is already a topic on this. Sorry.

did you replace the throw out bearing or pilot bearing?

also there are differnt splines on different tranny's maybe the splines on the disc are similar in size and physically go on over the shaft but dont catch the splines properly so when force it applied it spins because it is the wrong disc for the tranny?

Yes. Throwout bearing twice and Pilot bearing once.

Sounds liekt he next step is to replace the clutch cable, maybe it is stretched and when you engage the clutch it isn't engaging all the way so it would be pretty much riding the clutch everytime you press it in, that would eat up a disk fairly quick

also, when clutch is engaged the speedometor moves. quite a bit... in idle it will be around 20 k/mph. every gear including Neutral. with the speedo going up with every higher gear.

something I should mention. I can't remember if it was after replacing the block or replacing the transmission. When putting back the driver side axle, it wouldn't go in all the way. There was still maybe an inch of clearance.

Anyways I put it all together anyways to see if the car would work and after a quick test drive around the block., I checked again and it had gone in...

Would this have any affect at all? Man, I have searched all over and there were a couple problems similar to mine but still different. (Shattered Clutch, broken Clutch pedal) This is driving me crazy, I just wanna finally start on the body work.

Someone please help me ! Thanks

IF the axle isnt in all the way the car acts 'weird'(someone explain why because i don't understand it) i used a 2x4 & a hammer to get my driverside axle in, put something soft on the axle end of the 2x4...dont tear the boot like me

you sure it's in all the way?

I checked both axles and on the driver side where it connects to the transmission, there is about a 1 inch clearance. On the passenger side axle it is in totally.

Could this explain the "pop" or bang i heard the first couple times? The axle coming out of the tranny? The RPM just dropped suddenly. I was turning when I heard the noise. Would it cut off the power to the other axle if only one came out?

The third time though the RPM dropped quickly but didnt just drop, this was while just going straight. Is it poosible it slowly made itself out? Because I don't think the clutch would burn out that quick. 10 mins tops from when i put it in, I mean I just took it for a test drive, nice and slow.

Anyways, like I mentioned earlier, my speedometer is working fine. So that means if the clutch were slipping, the speedometer wouldn't be moving like it is now. Correct? Like the speedomenter will go up to 80 km/s while in third gear at 5-6k rpm.

Because when i press in the clutch there will be no noise but when I engage it I will hear a spinning. I would assume the engine and tranny are now connected.

OR am I totally off here...

you have to get the axle in all the way, did you burn the 3 clutches with an axle not in all the way?

when i couldn't get my drivers side axle in all the way it made alot of terrible noise & the wheels would move when i pushed the clutch in(was still on jackstands)...would that burn a clutch after 10minutes on the road? maybe?

honestly, I never even thought to check the axle. When I checked it the first time to see if it had gone back in, I totally forgot about it.

What I'd like to know is, if the axle were not in all the way. Would it also cut power to the other wheel?

yes, the stock diff is an open diff and the wheel that can spin easier will. If you had a lsd it would send power to the side with traction. but yes this is your problem make sure you have the right axle for the car make sure its not axle from an automatic it is a different lenth. check the splines on the axle to see if they are buggered up or not.
