Default Check Engine light

so this morning on my way to work my check engine light came on after what sounded and kinda felt like vtec disengaging. I have had this happen before due to low oil level, I'm wondering 2 things

1) where is the ECU in a 96 ex so I can try to see what code is being spit out of it
2) if it is the vtec disengaging will unplugging the battery and then replugging reset the ECu, or is there a better way.

My car drives sounds and rides without any detection of something being wrong...
anyone have any ideas?

629 Posts and you don't know where your ECU is? Had to ride ya' on that one.

The ECU is located under the passenger side kick panel. Remove it [kickpanel] and look for a green rubber plug that has two connectors inside of it. One connector has a black and a brown wire in it. Take a paperclip and short these wires together.

Go ahead and turn your key to 'on' and watch the CEL light blink. Long blinks denote the 10's posititions, and short blinks are for the 1's posistion.

Refer to the link in my sig for the codes mean.

Then you didn't make the connection properly.

That means there are no codes stored in the ecu.
