1. It's not partially personal prefence, it's mostly personal preference.
2. That is open ended enough that you didn't leave a budget. You can expect to spend 300+ for a nice sub (retail pricing).

That being said -

Focal makes a nice high end 10 as does diamond audio. The diamond audio D9/TDX smokes every sub I've heard, but for $560 it better be that damn good

there are really a lot of companies that make great 10s... for the money, i like elemental design... give them a call at 858-605-1356 and talk to Chris http://www.edesignaudio.com, they have some of the best customer service i have ever experienced from a company, and their subs sound very nice...

10"JLW0 if you can get a hold of some because they are discontinued. They are great for the price and install friendly. They are really easy to work with.

Image Dynamics IDQ. The company is world-famous for superb SQ, doesn't require alot of power, and can be used in tiny enclosures like .65cu.

i have an eD 11ov.2 in a 0.5cu box... if you are looking to save space but still get loud, i really recommend at least the 11kv.2, going from a w7 to a 8, albeit a good 8 would kill me ...

i have not heard the 9kv.2, but eD subs are well known for there accuracy and sq... for reference, my friends sealed 12w6 sounded heavier and fuller, and my sealed 11ov.2 sounded tighter and more responsive... they both sound very nice, and the difference in sound is really user preference...

now looking at the 11ov and the 11kv, both take the 0.5 cu box and could handle my 500/1 but i dont know how much space they would take up in my trunk. I was thinking about learning to fiberglass by glassing a 9kv in my spare tire or in the side of my trunk in my accord, or that new sq 10 they are coming out with. I am starting to outgrow the loudness the w7 has. I even have to turn down the bass on my head unit, and i want to be able to use my trunk again
