Question for washington state owners
Took my 97 ITR for emissions and they tested from the tailpipe and I failed. I went to a local shop and they said 96 and up they just check the computer to tell if the car is throwing any codes. So he tried to read mine and couldnt, that is why they probobly tested from the tailpipe. I have a jdm motor with a jdm ECU could this be why they couldnt read it? I was told to use a usdm obd2 ECU would that work? Thank you for any help. Also is that true that they dont check emissions from the tailpipe?
You have two options:
Make your motor to OBD2 compliant. This involves getting a USDM ITR ECU and installing a 2nd O2, CKF, etc. This is more work than it is worth.
Get a B16 OBD-I ECU (94-95 Del Sol VTEC) and take the sniffer test.
I had a JDM ITR motor in my Civic with a Spoon ITR ECU which had a rich map and a higher redline (9500?). When it came time for emissions I borrowed an OBD-I GS-R ECU and I passed fine.
good luck
