Default vtec doesn't engage in first gear, other weird things...

Ok, so I just finished my h22 swap. I was originally going with a chipped p28 ecu, but put in my JDM p13. I am running a code 23, which is a knock sensor I believe. But vtec won't engage in 1st gear, it just acts like a rev limiter at 6200 RPM. Then in like 2nd and 3rd gear, it sort of shudders at higher RPMs...could the knock sensor cause this? its the only code I have.

Still the first part of what that poster said holds true, your knock sensor error code sent your ECU into safemode. Try resetting your ECU by either remove battery or clock fuse and see if you still get the code when you start it back up again. Replace the knock sensor if you get the code again and see if you still get the problems.

Yes, if your ECU has a CEL code it will retard timing and wont let you rev above 6500rpm. Fix your knock sensor probem and reset your ECU, dont try to drive your car hard before that because of the ignition timing being retarded.
