Default Quick Q - OBDII vs OBDI - AUTO -> MANUAL swap

hey - can you guys confirm this:

I'm having a manual transmission installed and my mechanic says i need to change the ECU to an ODBI. Is that true?

I didn't think the ECU needed changed, but rather reprogrammed. I thought ODBI was for cars up to '95. Anything past that has an ODBII.

Thanks much

why would he even say that unless he wanted more money? all you would need to do MAYBE is change out your obd2 auto ecu for a 5spd. i swapped in 93 tranny into my 91 da, all i need to complete the swap is put in the 5spd cluster and a 5spd ecu, i run the auto ecu right now but it doesnt run to its fullest. hes just tryin to faux wit you

you have a 99 LS, its OBD II a or b?

your going to have to search for an ECU that fits, you can use the automatic one, but your going to have the check engine light on, its no biggie,

i did an auto to manual swap before..just FYI

I have a 94 Ls (obd 1) and I put a 2000 GSR tranny in. No CEL, same ECU, no problems.

mine's a 99 LS and the mechanic said i would get more HP out of the engine if i use an ODBI - could anyone confirm this?

he also mentioned that upgrading the ODBII from an auto to a manual would be about $500 - so it could be that he's just trying to save some $$.

Could anyone confirm or deny that an ODBI would be the way to go on a auto to manual swap? Maybe also give some reasons for this.

Thanks much

i found some ODB2's for 96-99 for about $100 - so they're not really $500 as originally quoted.

I was told the ODB2's have some type of limiter around 6500 RPM's, that the ODB1's don't and that's why the ODB1 would be better suited for my application.

How true is that? Any thoughts?

Thanks

Has anyone downgraded from an ODB2 to an ODB1 for a good reason?

Why would one do that?

unless you want to tune your car to a decent extent in the future its not worth switching over to obd1. if anything get an 5spd ecu for your car and swap it out and youll have no problem

obd-1= 92-95 honda/acura 1 O2 sensor
obd-2a= 96-98 honda/acura 2 O2 sensors
obd-2b= 99+ honda/acura

dont think you need to change ecu's just b/c your changing tranny's. think someones trying to get more $$$ from you
