suspicious about my new GSR
Alright.. there are a few things buggin me about my 98 GS-R that I recently bought. First off, the valve cover is red. Is it supposed to be red, because from what my friend is telling me and from what I've seen it's supposed to be black. Also, my side skirts are black, not painted white like the rest of the car. What RPM should I be at with the stock tranny going 75-80 in 5th? Also, do ALL 98 gs-r's come with leather interior, or was it optional? Cause I'm worried there might be some things the prev owner didn't tell me.
Thanks in advance.

My GSR tranny spins about 4000rpms @ 80. But I have larger than stock wheels/tires. Someone will prob. chime in with the exact RPMs w/ stock wheel/ tire size.

Some came with cloth. None of this stuff should be cause for concern.

Valve cover on gsr is black, on type r its red, couldve jus replaced valve cover or painted it..... the stock side skirts on gsr dont come painted, only on type r and 75-80 in 5th should be at about 4k rpms give or take( dont quote me) also rim and tire size will affect rpm at given mph... leather is optional
Your valve cover is painted, GS-R's did come with cloth on some years in the 3rd generation, and i beleive 80 is like 4k RPM in a GSR....redlines like 8500 or something, LS is 7000 revlimit 6800 redline
Edit: Damn 2 people beat me to it, and there wasn't anyone when i hit reply

80mph the rpm should be around 4.5k, stock gsr valve cover is black and the gsr's side skirts were never painted the body unless you get the factory optional front lip, side skirts.
Hope that helps
EDIT- holy crap 3 people beat me to it

Please post Vin number on yopur next post, leather was an option, and RS, LS, GS, and GSR had black side skirts...It's the ITR that comes the same color as the car...As for the Red valve cover post a picture, it might be JDM
, but that doesn't mean you can't paint a GSR valve cover with some wrinkle paint...Also post a picture of the engine VIN, and block code...

Tire and/or wheel size will not affect the indicated speed on the speedometer. A DC2 or DB8 GSR transmission will have a 4000 RPM engine speed when the indicated speed is 80 MPH. The actual speed depends on the tire/wheel size, but your speedometer reading is not affected by that.

where can I find the engine VIN and block code? i'll post a pic when I get home (hard at work currently >_<
also, i'm pretty new to stick, is that estimated 30 mpg just cruising in 5th the whole time, or is there something tricky I have to do like switch between 5th and neutral the whole time or something?

OK thanx for clearing that up. I was a little confused on that.

The VIN is in a lot of places. Along the driver's side of the dash, the firewall to the right of the battery, inside the door jambs, etc.

Don't pop into neutral on the highway. That will decrease your mileage and annoy other drivers.

That's what I figured, just wanted to make sure.
Alright so on the highway I should be getting around 30 mpg just cruising in 5th right? Any idea on what speed gives best mileage?

30mpg give or take, depending on how well in tune your car is. I seem to get the best mileage around 70mph. but I tend to go 80 most of the time, where I can still get ~29mpg.
