ipod directly to speckers?
Is there anyway I can hook my ipod directly to the speackers in my car and completely skip the head unit? I would prefer not to buy a new headunit or costly kit if I don't have to.
Yes, you can do it. Yes, it's been discussed before. However, it's not the best idea, because you will have one sound setting, and you will not be able to adjust bass and treble, etc...
If you really don't want to buy a head unit, go to http://www.logjamelectronics.com and buy an aux input adapter for the factory radio in the car.

do all honda factory head units have an auxilary jack? I have an aftermarket head unit from many years ago, which I don't believe has an aux jack in the front.
almost all aftermarket units have some sort of external input...aka aux...
however its not an aux port in the front.. those are newer units...
the aux is in the rear.. normally for a cd changer.. but can be used for something else..
---------
if u want our help u are going to need to tell us what kind of headunit u have...
if its stock, the make, model and year of the car would do.

you can still adjust the eq in the ipod if ou wanted to.....you best bet with a factory head is to try to find an oem or aftermarket adaptor stictly for ipods, then try an aux input of the chager....if you have none of these, then you need an fm transmitter - but they suck

That's what I'm gathering... I just assumed he meant through an amp... But maybe he meant through his factory radio, now that I read the post again... :shrugs:

And although someone said that you can adjust bass & treble on the ipod, it'll still sound like *****... You need the head unit.

You probably won't be able to hear your speakers over the road noise. I'm sorry to say it but this is kind of a ridiculous idea. Speakers take watts to drive. iPods probably produce fractions of watts.
Anyway, MP3 players are meant to drive headphones, which generally have at least 16 ohms impedance and sometimes 32 ohms. Car speakers have 4 ohms, and if you wired them in parallel your iPod would see a final load of 2 ohms, even though it doesn't have enough power to drive them. This would be close to a short circuit as far as your iPod is concerned. You could possibly blow your iPod while not hearing anything.

Oh wait.. I didn't read that you said without an amp or headunit.
To be more specific than Ludeman's post above, no, you can't just hook an ipod to your car speakers. You need some sort of amplification....
Keep your factory deck, get the aux in adapter, and be done with it.

First off, thank you guys for being so helpful
Secondly, I am quite the noob when it come to all things audio
Third- I have to make sure that the headunit I have in the car now has an auxillary input first right?

It's not going to have a true aux input... It may have a cd changer plug, into which you can plug an aux input adapter, then you would plug your ipod into that. Please see link I posted above for prices and models.
But yeah, you should probably pull the deck just to make sure it's got the plug on the back... You'll know if it's got a small round (or square) unused female connector.
You can see removal instructions at http://www.installdr.com.
Edit... Is the head unit in the car factory or aftermarket?
