What engine should I put in a '99 DX Hatchback?
Here's the deal:
I already have a b17 head, and can get a '99 b20 long-block (is that the b20z?) engine for $850.
If I do a b20z block/b17 head, I'll have to chip a p28 to get it running right..
If I do a b18 block/b17 head, I should be able to use a stock, obd2 ecu right?
I'm getting lazy in my old age and thinking that a straight b18c with matching ecu might be easiest swap, as it shouldn't need anything done to it..
Anyone have any other suggestions?

I'd say the easiest would be the B18B. Just remember, only 2000+ Acura ECU's plug directly into your wiring harness. They also come with an immobilizer though. If you go with a 99 or earlier ECU, you'll need a conversion harness but they don't come with an immobilizer. Trying to remove the immobilizer yeilds a CEL, which auto-fails you during emissions inspection if you have that in your area.
Chris, I just refreshed my memory.. I forgot about the whole OBD2 A and B thing.. so my civic is OBD2B, and so are the 00+ Integras. Does this mean I could drop a 2000 LS long-block in with a matching ecu and avoid any wiring harness changes at all? Would it be completely plug 'n play as far as the wiring harness goes?
The stock axles won't work with a b-series, but the hub/spindles are fine? That's convenient.. I would just need the motor mounts, and half-shafts..
We do have e-check in this area, and I already have an OBD2 to OBD1 conversion harness that I bought when I was planning on putting a OBD1 ecu in my old car, a 00 civic si, so I'm assuming I should be able to use that, but I do realize that my current harness won't have the vtec wire on it.

-2000 LS = plug and play
-B series axles will wok in your spindles, all b-series axles are the same, they will work
-you wont need to convert anything, and if you go to OBD1, you'll never pass "e-check"

I've heard of people in this area passing e-check with OBD1 ecus/engines in OBD2 cars, after plugging in doesn't do anything, the tech running the test will run it on the dyno and test it as an OBD1 car.
I guess this may have changed.. but for now, I'll run the full LS motor until I get what I need to put the b17 head on.. with a 00 ls ecu, it will still pass, and they won't care.. unless i don't have a cat
