Default Starter fried and now no power to car at all

Hey all, when i tightened the power wire to the starter *the one from the battery* i cracked the housing, so i tried to just kinda leave it where it was, the contacts were a bit loose. so i drove around the block drove fine.

i shut it off, and 5 minutes later i try to leave again and it did the turn key *CLICK* sounds, that usually happens when a wire is loose either on the terminals or the starter power, which in this case was it, so i wiggled it a little and tried to turn over again, and i saw a big spark fest from the starter solenoid, after which all my power to the car shut off. no headlights no nothing. what fried? i put a new starter on it, and still no power, i cant find any fuses that would have popped. Is there a fuse that cuts all power from the battery to everything in the car? Did i fry wires in the fuse box?

any help is appreciated.

thx

this morning as i get in the garage, the power was back, i thought sweet maybe the short found its way out of the system, so i tried to crank it, and as soon as i did, i heard it pop again, and all power went off again, i removed all grounds cleaned em, put em back on, how would a fried starter cause this to malfunktion alltho i have a newstarter now. the power wire from the battery HAS to be on the starter in order for the car to get power correct?

if so then why, i thought it just powers the starter?

check all your ground wires, terminals, hell replace the battery. get yourself a voltage meter and trouble shoot. that's the only way your going to find it.

What most likely happened was that when you did your spark fest you held it for to long and drained your battery. Try taking it to an autozone and having it charged.

Id lean towards a ground issue, make sure the 2 main ground wires are good, just becuase u see the wire, does not mean the wire did not die in the shielding, i had that happen to me, 2 weeks to finally figure out swapping out main ground wire from transmission to chassis, car started right up

good luck

you may have corroded the terminal when it sparked. Or possibly ruined the battery.

That's why you must invest in a multimeter. It's cheap, easy to use, and tells you SO much.

anytime you are gonna work on the starting or charging system, remove the neg bat cable. but look at the big 80 amp fuse and the tranny ground and make sure the pos cable on the starter is tight

update, i do have a multimeter and it sure did help, LOLOL i just over reacted cause i was tired and i have the flu, it was as simple and obvious as pie, when it shorted, immediately it would go to the ground, Main chassy ground that is, so im guessing it corroded like one of you said to the frame, i took the bolt off and cleaned it with coke and sanded it again. After that all was good.

Thx you guys have been great help.
