Honda Newb
Hey All,
I'm new to Honda-tech.com, and have a new to me 91 SI 2.1 , that decided not to start this afternoon.
I pulled the codes have an 8 and 17 ( the 17 is old since I bought the car). So a little history I been having an intermitant ALT light and the A/C quits a times, sometimes simply turning it off for a minute then on it works fine other times it won't come on at all. The speedo drops out regularly.
Yesterday on my way to work, the car and the a/c ran fine for @ 4 miles, then the a/c stopped, I noticed my tach was droping in and out, and the radio stopped, I shut off the a/c compressor, Tach acted normal, radio came back on. Another 2 miles tach and radio are acting up agian I shut off the blower motor, Tach and radio normal. 2 more miles and no radio. So I shut it off, I'm thinking crap that pos Kragen rebuilt Alt just quite and running the battary. anyway I made another 20 miles to work no more trouble with everything off. I grab the AVR charging system tester and check the car running at idle 13.1 volts 2k rpms 13.5-6 and 24amps, so not the ALT.
After work I looked for grounds G101 and G201 in the kick pannels didn't find them. I tested cleaned 3 out of 4 engine grounds, charged the battary @4-5 amps for an hour and drove home. A/c on , mostly, and Metalica blarring, no problems.
Today I jump in it to pick my Daughter up from work, It starts normal runs I turn on the A/c and it quits, crank it up agian stumble rattles and quites. Turn A/c off radio off blower motor off try agian same thing. Atfer getting my Duagther from work in 2nd car, I pulled the codes and got the normal 17 VSS and the new code 8 tdc sensor.
I have run several searches and havn't seen any threads that help so far, I'm hoping You folks here have some idea's.
I sould also tell you that a shop put a used MHN2.1 @ 60k miles ago, I have had the car since May this year and have replaced the front brake rotors, Alt ,Rad, both rad hoses and thermostat. All stock replacement parts.
My history I have been working in the aut repair industry for 26 years, the last 17 as a journy level mechanic for a huge power company fleet I know domestic obd1 and obd2 system well, and have attened Ford master tech training, The only Honda's I have worked w/ (and very little) are NGV's and Hybrd Civic's.

Well I thought I better check the the timing belt (newish was told by PO ). So I had the wife crank it while I whacthed 1 cam viva the oil fill and bam it starts and runs smooth sweet. try all the engine loads runs fine. I'm begining not to trust this car very much, Good thing its aready paid for itself in mpg and i have AAA
