Default Turbo filter alternative, for those of you with no space...

We just finished the topmount for my dc2. Before we started I bought a k&N ru-2510 filter that was only like 3.5" tall. We tried to build the manifold so that I could run the filter, but with no luck (power steering in the way). I am hesitant to just run a piece of screen mesh, and have been pondering.

Would there be any disadvantages to running a piece of mesh, with a piece of a cotton tshirt clamped over it? If you used a thin, breathable shirt (or fabric)...I think it would flow fine, and it would catch the small dust particles that screen cant. If you used white, you could even see when it was dirty and needed cleaned/changed. I hear of people running foam over the mesh (like foam from a turbo filter)...but It seems the heat/time/pressure could cause the foam to break down and suck through your turbo... gimme your thoughts?

I have room for literally maybe 1"... and there's no way a 2" filter would flow enough to support 600 hp

Better off using the K&N air filter dust cover over your turbo

just a piece of cloth over your inlet will have less area so a 2" filter will most likely make more power.

Take some pics. I have yet to see a setup where a filter/intake arm cannot be run. Just gotta think outside of the box. Cut metal if need be. I even run a filter and an intaek arm off my top monut and that's with a 4" inlet.

with a top mount mesh and a hose clamp will do the trick. I use two layers of aluminum mesh.

wire screen/2x pantyhose/wire screen. in that order. wont kill flow, and the two layers of screen will prevent the pantyhose from getting sucked up if it rips

tony the tiger did a good write up on this...

do a search, i cant really find it right now i'm at work.

but after reading it, i took my screens off and got creative and was finally able to run a real filter setup, and its made a biig difference.

i dont have dyno numbers, but tony the tiger does...

Having an intake arm helps channel airflow.

my experience with using a screen and filter material was it resricted my turbo very badly and I wasted countless hours on trying to figure out why my car wouldnt hold any boost..

Your car wont hold boost have nothing to do with the screen you were running, unless you run a piece of cotton t-shirt over it

A guy I know couldnt figuer out why he couldnt make any boost. Didnt matter how much he turned up the boost controller.

I saw he was running a filter screen with a cotton filter over the top.
I told him to take it off because of that post I read here.

He picked up 6 mph on his next pass, and the only thing change was his ghetto screen filter (boost probably went up as a result).

It makes perfect sense. A real filter is not a flat piece of material, its has probably 15x as much surface area (if not more) compared to the inlet of the turbo.

Actually the ru-2510 k&n filter I would have had to run (if I could have fit it) would have only been 2.5 - 3x the surface area of just screen....
