losing oil, how to determine if its rings or valve guides
my '98 Type R motor has approx 40k, and is living happily in my civic, however I am losing a considerable amount of oil between oil changes. I have noticed a lot of oil coming out of the valve cover tube going into the intake, but not much smoke from the tailpipe. I am afraid the valve guides are leaking. is there any way to test this without taking the engine apart? I did a simple compression test, and got 190psi across all 4 cylinders. any help would be greatly appreciated.
190 is kinda low for a type r motor.....A gsr gets 210 after 6 engine strokes.if you do have alot of oil seeping out of that pcv tube vent on the valve cover....its probably from too much blow-by,which means bad rings.your car may not smoke enogh for u to notice. If it was your guides or seals, you would let out a good puff of smoke when you take off from a dead stop, like my car
then it would go away while your cruising. hope this helps, good luck

Actually, if it were the guide seals, then wouldn't you see 'blue smoke' under decel conditions?
Have you ever disassmembled the head enough to get at the vavles and give them a tug side-side to what kinda guide to stem clearance you got going on.
Just some thoughts

2 ways....
do a compression test then do a weet compression test (where you pour a teaspoon of oil throught the spark plug hole) and if it raises the compression its the rings, if not its prolly the valves.
Or just have a leak down test done.

Except maybe under extreme conditions, that tube should suck air in, not spit oil out. Make sure your PCV valve and system is functioning properly.
