burning oil--Diagnostic Question.
OK. looking into stuff today.
I am in the process of trying to figure out why I'm burning oil. Its worst on hitting the throttle and coming off of it I get the blue smoke.
I just took off the pcv valve. Wouldn't you know it...there is oil in it. Enough to be dripping out. Do I have my answer here or not? Is this piston oil seals leaking and do I need look no further? I get no smoke from my valve cover when the car is running.
I will continue to pull plugs and check compression.
let me know your initial answers please!!

Change out the PCV valve and see what happens. Mine blew pretty bad till I changed the valve.
May not be the cure, but it is cheaper to try than new rings...

Or, would putting in a catch can get the oil? I have one sitting here waiting to go in.
Would checking compression really mean anything if its ok? I mean good compression could still mean lots of oil going by a bad piston oil seal right?

Put in the catch can would help however, you want to replace the bad PCV valve.
Yes checking the compression will tell you if there is leakage in the cylinder weather it be from bad rings or bad seal on the valves!

ok... plugs look ok, no oil fouling, a bit rich maybe (some black carbon mostly on the edges around the plug but the electrodes have a nice tan color).
the compression is 180-180-180-180 turning over about 8X
the valve cover breather has no oil coming from it.
I disconnected the PCV valve and plugged the port on the intake manifold. I wrapped some paper towel around the hose from the pcv. I then started the car and there is more smoke now than before. Even at idle. Can someone deduce from this what is happening?? If I hit the throttle just a bit, more smoke comes out. So in essence, with the PCV system unhooked from manifold vacuum, there is more smoke. And remember, there was oil in the PCV itself.
I am going to Honda to buy a new Honda PCV in case this Purolator just suck. Hopefully you guys can do some brainstorming while I am gone
thanks!!

Well,
I took another look over by the turbo itself and sure enough, now I can actually see oil on the downpipe and stains along the turbo/downpipe interface. I also lost a bolt as well that loosened up and fell out.
So, I wonder if thats the whole problem or not? I guess its gonna have to come out and go back to CA. Damn.

yea, i think for sure its AT LEAST the turbo seal. as I said, I can see the oil now. its obviously gotten worse so that there is liquid oil on the downpipe coming out from the turbo leaking past the flange to the downpipe.
