D- series transmission wont seperate
Keep spreading the ring. It can get hung up in there yet appear to be loose. Sometimes they pop off very easily, sometimes they seem like they will never release. Just keep lessing with it, it will finally separate.
I had to get a 2nd pair of hands to help spread the clip while I moved the case.
Also If you taped up the splines of the Input shaft..
that may prevent the case from coming off too..

not really, because the shift interlock holds the shift forks which old the main/countershaft in place.
IT's probably lifting the differenital. get a sotcket with a extension and knock that good old open diff BAR
i wonder if that thing ran low on oil and expanded the bearings
