Default Question about 96-00 Civic midpipe section...

Will the midpipe from a 98 4dr lx fit a 2dr ex?

midpipe meaning the section containing the resonator? Then yes 2dr and 4dr exhaust systems from honda are exactly the same, goin from lx to ex i am pretty sure they have the same exhaust system as well, should bolt up fine!

Yes, the midpipe containing the resonator is what I was talking about. The pipe rusted off right behind the resonator on my gf's civic and I was just going to use the old one off of her old totalled civic. Thanks for the info, can anyone else confirm this!?

Ok, awesome, that's what I will be doing. In order to remove everything from the midpipe back (midpipe including resonator, piping and muffler) what tools will be needed? I will be performing this about an hour away from my house and want to make sure I have all the tools required. My guess is I just remove the c-clamp that connects the midpipe to the cat. converter piping and unhook all the hangers...correct? It's kind of hard when you aren't actually looking at the exhaust, but instead trying to remember what it looks like just from being half way under the car once, haha.

3 bolts connecting the cat to the midpipe, you're probably going to have a hell of a time getting them off. Rust is a wonderful thing. I ended up breaking all 3 of mine in half, so you may want to get new bolts and nuts. I want to say 12mm and 1.25 thread size, but it's been a while. Otherwise yes, it's just unbolting from the cat and the midpipe from the axle back and pulling off the hangers.

Thanks man! I'm not actually unbolting the axle back from the midpipe though...I decided just to do the full midpipe back replacement. How hard is it to unbolt the exhaust from the midpipe back? From the pictures I have been seeing for replacements it looks like it is just connected by a c-clamp, but I could be wrong...

Should be 3 bolts to cat and 2 bolts to axleback. If you're not going to be replacing axleback, I'd getting new bolts for that too, same size.

Thanks a lot man! So all I need are tools to remove the 3 bolts connecting to the cat. converter and I'm set? How sure are you on 12mm and 1.25" thread size? Also, any idea how long the bolts are? I really appreciate all the help

This will work but you will have cut the lx pipe because it is longer...

Thread is right, mm is wrong.

Cat bolts are 14mm 10x1.25
Bpipe bolts are 12mm 10x1.25

So if I'm removing from the midpipe back (midpipe including resonator, and axel back including muffler all as one piece) I will need 3 14mm 10x1.25" bolts to replace the ones if they break? Or will I need the bpipe bolts? Thanks for all the help man, I really appreciate it.

Also, sniggler said it will be longer which in theory makes sense, but everyone is telling me it will fit fine...any opinions on this?!?

First off your not going to be able to remove them as one peice, your gonna have to unbolt the axle back and the midpipe from the cat, the bend won't allow you to get it past the rear arms...not sure of the length exactly, i recently replaced my exhaust on a 00 civic and i can tell you its no easy job taking those 3 bolts off the cat! Took me about 3 hours for the install, broke 2 of 3 bolts, ended up unbolting the cat from the header, removing o2 sensor from cat, and pulling the whole exhaust off from the header...butttttt if your lucky you might be able to unbolt the 3 with a big *** wrench ( i used an air gun) ,

note that the top bolt on the cat is almost impossible to get to, once you break the bolts which will most likely happen just take the old ones to autozone and fine some similar ones thats what i did, bring plenty of metric wrenches and sockets, anywhere from 11mm up to 15mm just to be safe...good luck!


Edit: I don't think they would be longer, if you look up any aftermarket exhaust for the civic's, 2 and 4 door exhaust have the same part # so i wouldnt see why they would be any different?

LX and EX exhaust pipes are diff because LXs have the cat cast onto the manifold as opposed to under the car. The pipes are the same between models whether it is a 2 or 4 door. To make room for the cat under the car, the b pipe on EXs has to be shorter. Good luck.

If your car has the cat in the exhaust manifold, your midpipe is longer than the ex midpipe. You'll be left with a gap the length of an ex/si cat. You could get a test pipe or a "high flow" cat from ebay for an ex/si to fill the gap.
