Default Stereo Mounting kit not fitting in 97 Prelude

Hey all,

I have been trying to fit a mounting kit in my 97 Prelude for a few days now. I have the METRA - 99-7898 mounting kit.
No stereo was in my car when I bought it. The guy I bought it from said it was stollen.

I know that I can follow instructions well, but there is absolutely no place inside the space to screw in the mounting kit. I see four holes, (2 on each side)but none of the brackets can fit these mounting holes. Even when I put the mounting kit up to the console cover face, I can not get it to fit flush with the dash board.

My question is, is there some sort of 'L' shaped bracket that needed to be in the car so that I can screw the sides of the mounting kit into? The mounting kit tells to use a certain bracket, but the screws are in a different geometric plan than where the car has holes for screwing it in.

What am I doing wrong?
If there is a bracket, where can I get this bracket from?

Thanks for all who read.

I haven't done one of these cars in years, but I remember the dash bezel popping off, and 4 screws securing the factory radio into the double din sized hole... The screwholes were in the structural part of the dash, IIRC...

I have never used the metra kit, but the HON-K828 just screwed right in...

Okay... Metra's instructions say that you just break off all tabs on the din ring except for tabs "A" on the top and "G" on the bottom, then to snap the ring into the dash bezel.

Please see pages 8 & 9.

Thought you said you could read directions??

I did that. There is no way that the bracket snaps into the dash bezel. I took both in my hands, and I tried to clip it on infinite ways and combinations, and it just would not snap into any place.

You broke off all of the extra tabs, correct?

I remember some of them being wicked tight, but they always snap in. You might have better luck putting the bezel on a desk and pressing on the kit with the handle end of a screwdriver... I do it that way with the Ford truck kits that snap in. They're tough but they go with some force.

The part I think missing from mine is #5, #6. I do not have those pieces on mine.
I looked and I see that I do not have #8 either. Is #8 the part that you are talking about that the radio should clip into?
Do I need it as well?

Ohhh wait... I'm a retard... I was looking at Fig. E & F (which are for the Civic)...

You are correct. You need parts #5 & #6 and #8. And the screws/bolts to hold everything together.

So yeah. Order up those parts, and I bet it will work.

Also, you'll need a pocket to take up the space under the radio (or on top if you choose to mount it that way). Metra makes a nice universal pocket, or you could get the single DIN pocket from Honda when you order your brackets.

Don't trust the instructions, [on what tabs to brake off] confirm first that you are getting rid of the right ones, and yes you will need the missing parts. 94
