Is the MSD ignition worth it?
I have the 8.5mm MSD ignition wires. I am considering getting the MSD ignition box and distibutor cap. My question is is it worth it? Does it really give you a better throttle response and faster acceleration? Can you feel the difference in performance after the MSD is put in? Thanks.
As far as I know, that aftermarket stuff is a waste of money unless your making gross amounts of HP. The stock ignition system is fully capable of doing what it's supposed to do.
I have one and I definitely like it. Don't ask me for specific numbers because I don't have them. However, the difference is definitely feelable. The MSD with external coil make the car feel a lot more torquier and throttle response is accentuated a bit. However, like everyone else is saying, this should not be your first mod because you'll waste your money. The OEM ingintion works very well and does not need improvement until you are fairly deep in mods and/or increased compression. All-in-all, the MSD parts work very well, but don't go out of your way to buy one of these setups until you've done other, more significant mods.
I used to have one for about 5 yars and then the MSD Box took a dump on me causes the engine to sputter and RPM goes crazy. I have replace everything except the Box but turns out to be the Box in the end.
So I mailed it back to MSD for service cost me only $50.00 and then I sold it on Ebay with the rest of the hardware. When you hook up the MSD, make sure you keep ALL the wires/clips off the Distributor, you'll need some day. I ended up paying $ 60.00 for the thoses wire/clips when I went back to stock.

I have cap, coil and wires. I noticed a slight improvement in throttle response. For 200 bucks you'll pay I would say spend money elsewhere for now. It does look very pretty though.
For street setups stock honda ignitions work well up to about 400whp, above that you will want an external coil. A colder plug and smaller gap should also be used, depending on your hp level and if there is any misfire. That's for a boosted setup though, you will be fine with your setup, so it's defintely not worth it in my opinion to upgrade to MSD ignition.
9 out of 10 customers have problems with msd ignition systems at one time or another.
Stick to factory ignition components (cap/rotor/plug wires/coil) for applications under 500 whp
