Default Coolant leak, overheating .. Help!

I just went upto my work and picked up my check an hour or so ago. I left my car running outside, and took longer then i thought i would.. well my radiator fan was not on when i came out, i thought that was weird, then i see a small stream of coolant rolling out of the back of my car. so i get in it and the temp guage is all the way hot.. i turn off the car.. I walked upto Food lion, got some coolant, filled her up and drove about a mile home. no white smoke at all thank god.

i pop the hood to inspect further, there is a hose connected to the firewall almost directly behind the intake manifold.. coolant is dripping off the bottom of this hose.. the oil looked ok as well...

what is this hose? what could cause it to be leaking?

That is most likely the hose that goes to your heater core. My concern is that your fan was not running. I would look into that.

Is the hose split? If you cannot repair the hose you can always make a bypass tube that connects the inlet and outlet from the block to the heater core and just connect them basically looping it back into the motor and not go into the heater core. That is what is done on race cars. So basically disconnect on of the heater core tubes and run it into the block where the other one goes and it just creates a loop.

As far as the fan turning on check all the wiring.

My car has done that here and there. My fan NEVER turns on. I've been doing it for about 3 years now cuz I never find the time to do it. Just keep an eye on your temp gauge and coolant level. Just keep the car MOVING. You're good to sit in traffic about 5-10 minutes...just try to keep moving to let air across the radiator. You'll be fine tonight to drive, but you do need to fix the problem...as do I.

Tonight you're fine.

But for later, do you ahve a Helms manual? Or haynes? Try trouble shooting. I'm better (for my car) it's the wiring.

No need to re-route the hoses...more than likely th reason it's leaking is due to the hot coolant. This causes pressure in the cooling system. That hose is simply relieving the pressure. If the coolant temp stays decent, it shouldn't leak anymore.

The fan switch is the black thing with two prongs coming out:

Connect the two wires that attach to it and the fan(s) should run..

As far as the leak, yes replace the hose if you can isolate the source:
basically all the black hoses carry coolant..

A pressure test is the best way to determine where the leak originates..

Fan switches can go bad, can't they? Maybe that's what mine's problem is...?

A good contributor to HT.

I suppose I need to go put my cooling fan back in to test this theory.

Thanks for helping me....I hope the other dude can figure out his.

I took the hose off and replaced it, the pressure from the coolant actually cracked it by the clamp.. i replaced this and its no longer leaking..

i think the fan stopped working.. and from sitting there for 15 mins or it got real hot and pressure built up and cracked the hose.. when i filled it back up and drove home the temp was fine , even though it is 95º outside

the fan isnt on, but im going to check it out later with all the info you guys have provided. thanks alot.. gotta love ht

my ***** thanks you as well.

Whoa...

Yeah, you're fine to drive on it, just keep a close eye on that temp gauge, and be prepared to pull of the road if neccessary.

Let me know what you find is wrong with that fan. Sorry to hear about your hose, mine hasn't cracked yet to the best of my knowledge, although it has cost me some seals. I'm gonna be pulling my engine apart and replacing the two main seals, and valve cover gasket. NOT looking forward to all the time to put in 30$ in parts.

Clean the VSS from the TOP and check the possible fuse.
