stripped brake rotor retainer screw, what should i do ?
i was going to change my front brake pads and rotors today, but ended up stripping the brake rotor retainer screw so now i cant get the rotor out, i didnt know the screw was that soft, any suggestion on what i can do to get screw out ?
i tried using a screw extractor but it ended up broke in half and part of it is still lodge inside the screw
i havent attempt the other side yet in fear or stripping that side too, so whats the best method to get these screws out without stripping it ?

I know this is an old thread but I found this searching my problem.
Basically, I stripped out that retaining bolt. I've broken a screw extractor and about 10 drill bits trying to get this bolt out. any other ideas?

Thanks!
To clarify though, if I get the head off the screw (and leave the screw in place) the rotor should still come off?
Also, the head is pretty mangled and there is a broken piece of screw extractor in it (hardened steel, just breaks the drill bits) so I'm assuming a chisel is my only real option here? I have some wood chisels, will those work or is there another kind I should look for? thanks!

Those are not even needed imo, my new rotors for my JDM ITR conversion don't have the holes lined up so its said they if they might not line up the screws can be skipped. Gl getting it off.

it does **** all safety wise it just keeps your rotor on when you remove the wheel, it's "nice" to have but far from needed if you have pad that chew rotor its a pain. just leave it
FWIW, mine were probably about as tight as possible, when trying to remove them. A sharp chisel turned them loose, after driving a nick into the outer edge of the screw head and then hammering the chisel to turn the screws counter clockwise.
use an impact screwdriver and you won't have these problems

word i always hit it with a torch. use the #3 phillips not a more common #2 its bigger and combined with a cordless impact (i use my 18v dewalt) then pop right off. when you go and re install put a tiny bit of antiseize on it.
if its stuck just get a drill bit probably something around 3/8 and just drill out the head of the screw. once you do that it relieves the pressure on the rotor and you can take it off

The screw extractor is made of hardened tool steel. You will not be able to drill through it with conventional drill bits. Remove the rotor and hub as an assembly, then decide if you want to take it to a machine shop and let them get it apart, or buy another hub and rotor.
