Use both. Both will help tone down the exhaust note.

Just get a long resonator. A CAT will slow you down.

cats reduce a lot of noise and emissions, but i'd go with both if possible. and about cats slowing you down, they do, but if u get a high-flow cat it shouldnt slow u down too much.

How much power do you gain from having a straight pipe?? Not much unless you are heavily modified. You mostly get sound and smell.

when i had my stock exhaust system, i decided to take out the resonator first then the cat converter. the resonator didn't make it louder at all not a bit but when i took out the cat...geez after awhile i couldn't stand it any longer especially on the highways. which is better...a used honda cat converter or a decent aftermarket CAT ?? i'm choosing not to use a resonator since i'm only going to waste even more cash

I would just get an aftermarket cat converter. Randomtech, Catco, and Carsound are a few good ones.
