1997 Honda Civic Si - for real?
Hi there, I'm in Canada.
I was looking at 2 1997 Civic Si coupes. Or what the owners say are Si, anyways. I've heard a number of different things from people on forums, everything from there is no such thing as a 1997 Si coupe. to the 1997 si coupe was only in Canada and is the equivalent of the US EX, so would have the EX engine (which we know is the D16Y8, right) to that all Si's are shipped with the D16Y8 127 HP SOHC VTEC.
One guy said his engine was the 1.6 non-vtec, which, from my research, is the D16Y7 rated at 106 hp. I have not viewed the car yet, so I can't be sure he even knows what he is saying, for all I know there's a nice V-tech under his hood and he's just not all that bright. Then again, he's got it dressed up, so I imagine he'd at least know what kind of engine is in the thing.
The other didn't know the horsepower (said 'something like 180?' LOL) so looking under the hood, I see that there is no indication on the top of the engine that it is the 1.6 V-tech. So I look lower for the model number and lo and behold there's a D, a 1, a 6, a somewhat mangled Y, and an 8 that was definately scratched in and bigger than the other digits. No way it came from the factory like that.
SO, what have we got here? A guy trying to pull a fast one on me (or possible someone pulled it on him when he bought it?
I'm thinking 1. the second car, the one I saw, maybe it's not even an Si. Or, someone marked up the engine to fool someone. Or, the original engine blew and the replacement was some modified job.....
any thoughts on what could be the deal here?

No 97 Si's. No USDM Si's from 96-98.
There are a lot of idiots out there. One guy tried to sell me an "Eclipse TURBO". It was an RS and he told me the hump on the hood was where the turbo goes. I told him to show me the turbo under the hood and he said he doesn't know what one looks like. Most likely the guy probably got screwed into buying the car. I'm sure someone ended up buying the "Eclipse TURBO" that this guy tried to sell me.

The Candian "Si" is our EX here in the States. It does indeed come with a D16Y8 - that was the only motor choice for the Canadian Si from 96-98 - and if there's anything else in the engine bay, it's either not a real Si or it has a motor swap. Period.
In Canada, the "SiR" is our USDM Si.

What exactly is the question? Do you want to know what the horsepower is? If a D16Y8 exists? not sure what you want to know

If you're worried about it having vtec, look for the solenoid.
Common sense will tell you a scratched in "8" on the engine block is sketchy...
