He should take it to a shop. That way they can recharge it ,and also look for leaks.

You can go to Orieley's and get freon and the dye. The dye comes with a little UV pen light and the glasses you need for like $20 and the freon is like $8-$10 per can.
I used the DIY kit on my GSR, dumped in one can, put the gague on and it needed another can. So I bought another can, was bending over and started to fill it up some more when the line right near the turbo blew open and I got a nice mouthful of freon..... take it to a shop and look for leaks

i've had the diy guage and have used it on 4 different cars. when i used it for my integra i bought a r134a can for high mileage cars and it had something to seal small leaks... i ahvent had to refill it but the can was like 13 bucks
IF DIY GET THE KIT WITH THE GAUGE BECAUSE IF YOU OVER CHARGE OR UNDERCHARGE IT WONT BE COLD AND IF YOU OVER DUE IT MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE A/C COMPRESSOR. BUT IF YOU DO GET THE KIT WITH THE GAUGE AND THE FREON WITH THE DYE ALREADY IN IT. ALL YOU HAVE TO BUY WITH BLUE ULTRAVOILET LIGHT TO CHECK FOR LEAKS.

The reason you need to fill it with freon is because it is what makes it work.... its like filling a car with gas. If you don't have a leak you will amost never have to recharge your system completely.

Well, I know that's the reason, but why is it that it it ran out in the first place.
