technically how much harm can be done?
Hey guys: I searched and came up with nothing on this...
My CV's are toast, they click turning both ways, and the boots are torn and they are done for....
My question is, am i going to harm anything else by not repairing them? it is not a cheap job and I don't have a hoist or even a garage for that matter? What will eventually happen? they will sieze?? or just break what will happen if they get to that point?

Without grease, they will heat up and most likely seize up, and will probably snap, leaving you stranded with a tow bill.
When one of my axles broke, it broke inside the hub and sheared some teeth off inside the hub. I could have had a new hub pressed in, but my friend had one laying around so I just took that instead. Having a new bearing pressed in, not to mention the cost of a hub is not cheap.
Just goto autozone and buy their remanufactured $60 axles. You don't need a garage for this, you can pop the ball joints with the ratchet handle method. Do not use the autozone balljoint puller. It pushes up ON the balljoint and mushrooms the nut if it's really hard to pop. This becomes either a pain in the ***, or a costly repair.
Parts list for the job:
Jack & jack stands
Sockets: 17mm, 14mm, I forget the size of the axle nut (32mm I think?)
Pry bar or a sufficient screw driver
Breaker bar for the axle nuts
Cotter pins
And of course, the ratchet. A 1/2" ratchet seems to work best when popping ball joints.
I know there is a howto on HT somewhere that goes through this in detail. It's really not a difficult job. If you don't get hung up trying to pop ball joints or loosen axle nuts, or have difficulty getting the driver's side axle out of the intermediate shaft, the repair will go very quickly.
G'luck!

Axles.. piece of cake, i change on on my car every other month...
I've gotten to where i can gitter done in about 10 minutes.
Make sure you get the autozone lifetime warranty axles
The info above is good enough you should be able to get it accomplished, but dont neglect it b/c the towing bill will cost more then a new axle

How do you change it in 10 minutes? Driver side maybe but passenger side? Do you have some trick for doing it w/o having to drain the tranny?
