As long as it's the same number of doors it will fit. I don't think thats what your problem is though. It sounds to me that the tracks are pinched at the tops.

Is the gear on the window motor missing teeth? I suggest you take it all apart and inspect. That will be the best way to find whats failing.

Roll the window down half way. Take out the two 10mm bolts in the window tabs. Pull the window out at an angle. Place it somewhere safe. Take the rest of the 10mm bolts that hold the regulator out.(4-6 bolts) Fold the regulator inside the door to make it easier for extraction. Take out regulator. Inspect it. You really need to take the tracks completely out to find any bends in the metal. Once you find something irregular, keep note for possible replacement. I've never replaced the tracks, I just bend them back. I do replace a lot of regulators at work though.

the regulator is the thing that the motor is bolted to. Usually the regulator and motor are replaced as one item. Yes a 96-98 will fit as long as it has the same number of doors. ex: a 4 door regulator will not fit a 2/3 door because they are different sizes. From 96-00 the doors are identical. Its still the same chasis.

my car does the same thing and there are no missing gears. it is very annoying. im guessing change your regulator to see if that helps cause i don't think it is teeth on the gear. im to lazy to fix mine for myself
