Default B series: shifting diagnosis

ok, i have a 90 CRX with a B18A1 and B16 trans (cable) which was recently purchased (the car that is).

basically the problem is it's hard to get into most gears and will grind in 4th, i am almost positive this is a synchro, slider, blocker ring, or even shift fork problem but i am wondering if it could be something simpler.

there isn't much play in the shifter all around, BUT i can yank up on it about a half an inch and hear the linkage bang underneath when i do it. could these tranny problems possibly be due to missing bushings or a linkage problem?

i would greatly appreciate responses as this is my daily driver! thanks

worn bushings/ misaligned shift linkage could defenetely cause bad shifting.
replace the bushings with poly ones, they are like $10 ..

well i found out that the linkage by the bottom of the shift rod was not even bolted up! (the 2 bolts that hold in the bigger bushing to the bottom of the car) and that's why i was able to move it up and down, it was banging on the exhaust.

it is still pretty hard to get into gears though, i am going to try the GM Synchromesh Modified for the trans to see if it will make a difference, at least get rid of the 4th gear grind for now.

as for it being hard to get into gear, i am leaning towards trans issues, the linkage looks fine to me...unless i am not doing something right. i have a feeling one of the shift forks are bent, which i hope not.

any other suggestions guys?

btw: the bottom of the shift linkage says "race tech" don't know if it matters.

Try replacing the clutch slave cylinder. When I did my GS-R swap it would do the same problems you stated. I thought it was just a bad clutch,so I replaced it, still did the same thing (needed a new clutch anyway). So I replaced the clutch slave and pretty much fixed it. So try replacing it, if it doesnt work then you know its not the clutch slave, then just go from there.
