HELP!! grinding sound, smoke coming out of timing belt cover, puddle of water!!
I just got back from picking my parents up from downtown when I notice a weird grinding or rattling sort of sound.. at first I thought it was the alternator belt but when I popped the hood there was a small bit of smoking that looked like it was coming out from the timing belt cover or somewhere under it. There's a small puddle of water right under on the ground.
Here are some pics, you can kind of make out the splash of water:

What is this? Water pump? I'm assuming I can't drive it now until it's replaced?

I may not have much knowledge when it comes to repairing Hondas, but that is definately the water pump. If it is making the awful grinding noise, don't think about driving it unless you want to end up fixing a lot more than just the water pump. Make sure to check your timing belt to see if it needs to be replaced while you have it all apart

Yeah, I have no other means of transportation and my mom still wants to go out somewhere. I'm going to take a look at the t-belt and hope to god it's not f*cked up already so my valves aren't gone aswell. It seemed to have been driving fine on the way home.. arg

Sweet, I was expecting some high price or something, thank god. Time to find my bike and ride down to the nearest Crappy Tire. My uncle has some air tools so hopefully the crank pully bolt won't be a b*tch to loosen.

hey whats going on... i recently just changed my water pump and timing belt about 1 month ago in my 89 civic hatch.. it cost 39.99 from kragen for the water pump and 27 for the timing belt.. i would rec. changing both since u already have both apart... it only took me about 1 hour to do it all... its very simple
I just got back from Crappy Tire and it was $60 bucks CDN for a rebuilt one and like $75 for a brand new one they had to order. I got the rebuilt one since I can't really wait since this is my DD and I have work tommorrow.

Well i run with my timing cover off (the top part) and the belt seems to be holding up VERY well... no problems at all.... and its a nice goodyear belt...

Just be lucky they last for as long as they do, and thats a pretty long time.
A new water pump you can get for at LEAST 50$ i believe at advance?, correct me if im wrong, but anyways it's not a big deal and pretty simple to replace. One more thing though, imo whenever i have replaced a waterpump on my car or some else's, i always changed the T-belt "timing belt" while i was in there anyways, and a t-belt is like 25$ tops i think.
