Default Overheating!?!?!?

Hey guys I currently have a 1991 CRX Si. Stock motor. A/C removed so theres a lot of room up front. It also has a civic half size radiator gansta leaned in the engine bay. Fan is stock and works. The radiator is not in the greatest shape but i dont think its so bad it would cause overheating although it may.

Heres my problem. The car overheats when cruising on the highway. I havent had a chance to sit in traffic for long enough to see if it over heats in traffic also. Normal operating temp the guage is slightly lower then the middle. It starts heating up and climbing. It will never get into the red or even higher then 3/4 up on the guage but it definately is running hot. (This is all with a stock guage). As soon as you turn the heat on it drops back down to normal and if you drive with the heat on it wont overheat.

I am going to be replacing the radiator soon but what else could it be? Thermostat? It just seems to run to hot but not severly overheating. I picked up a bottle of water wetter so ill see if that helps.

Please help me out because not only do i have to suffer in this heat with no a/c, i have to blast my heat while driving around!

Thanks

check if you can hear your fan come on, it should come on when the guage passes atleast half. if not theres your problem. If it continues to get too hot it could be dangerous as overheating eats head gaskets, a 600$ repair bill.

I find it odd that it overheats on the highway, the highway should be the place that it stays the coolest.

a fan won't help on the highway either, but that goes without saying.

I am banking on thermostat

by any chance did you touch your valves recently? cause tight valves can cause overheating
