Check Engine Light at 32K. Need Advice
My father recently purchased a 2003 s2k with about 31k at the time of purchase. Just recently the check engine light has turned on. The local dealer here is saying that it may be because maintenance is due and was not reset when all of the fluids were just changed. Will the check engine light turn on for maintenance only or is it another problem? I Suggested unhooking the battery to clear the code to see if it came back after being cleared.
Any suggestions on why the check engine light is on?
Also the dealer said the exhaust valves need adjusting because they tend to tighten up at about 30k. Is this true as well?
Thanks for the help.

The Maintenance required light is not at all connected to the Check Engine light. One shouldn't trip the other, since the Maint. Req. light is mileage dependent.
Unplugging your battery will clear the light, but the ECU will still store the code. Take it to a REPUTABLE dealer, since the one you went to obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.

Ok, I talked to my Father again and it is the maintenance light that is on and not the check engine light. So Im thinking that when he had all of the fluids changed they just forgot to reset the light. Does anyone know how to reset the maintenance light? The dealer told my dad to check the manual but he did not see anything in the manual about how to turn it off.
Thanks
Thanks
Thanks for the info guys. And I am assuming that it is not necessary to have the valve job done at 30K. Sounded a little funny to me.

Adjusting the valves is not a bad idea at 30k. I try to get to mine every 30-40k...many owners do notice a performance difference after they are adjusted.
Most shops charge $90-125 to do it for you...it is not that complex to do yourself, but does take some tools and know-how.

There is no "tune up" needed until 107k miles. That's how good your car is, so treat it with respect.

You can only hear loose valve lash. Valve lash that's too tight can burn up a valve.. and according to that dealer, the valves can sometimes tighten up at 30k.
I don't trust a 100k+ "first" tune-up further than I can pee. That's over eight years at average mileage.. stupid, especially with such a highly tuned engine the s2k has. If you read the fine print, it will also say something like "up to 107k miles." Only small percentage of the population live in conditions that allow that. It's also used as a marketing tool to attract old people that don't want to have to ever touch the car and end up running 87 octane fuel in it anyways because they don't know better. Treat your baby right and take care of her.
