Default Axle loose in transmission

92 VX; LSVTEC w/ hydro b16 transmission. Axles are thought to be 90-03 integ on the passenger side. Car has been on these axles for over 15,000 miles; the other day the pass. axle just pops out. Put new axle in and I found that the axle is loose in the tranny even after everything is bolted back down, fluid is leaking from where the axle enters the transmission. Please tell me I don't need a new tranny.

quick update, reinstalled original axle and the car kicked it out as soon as I put it in gear after starting the engine. Axle was definately seated fully in tranny. We also installed a new c-clip on the axle before re-install.

Ok, thanks; but why has this axle been fine for over 15,000 miles of hard driving and all of a sudden it pops out of the tranny repeatedly even after changing to a new c-clip?
