I noticed after driving for a bit my accord feels a little sluggish and I'm thinking it's because my underhood temp gets so hot from the header.After I shut my car off and it sits for a bit ,it's a lot more ballsy.Does anyone wrap their header? Can it damage the header?(warranty is void if wrapped)Are the HP gains just due to lower intake temps?What wraps look decent?Thanks a lot.

 

i think you basically answered your own question, well part of it. i think your "sluggish" ride is because of the heat under the hood, in that case, get a cold air intake and all is fixed )))))) as far as header wrap, it is supposed to keep the under the hood temps down, but i've heard rumors that it also reduced the life of the header ie: not letting heat escape from it. but these are just rumors mind u, i havent seen any actual proof of this. but dont blame your header for really hot hood temps, a normal header even with the heat shield still gives off A LOT of heat, especially on turbo'd cars or cars with a lot of horsepower. my nissan's heat shield would get RED HOT. you could stick a needle through it. craziness.

 

i used to have my old dc heder wrapped, but a problem with that as with anyhting the expansion and contraction of heating/cooling moisture is trapped between the outer tubing and inner wrap, resulting in faster corrosion. I would only wrap it if it has been caoted in some heat coating first, as the water will have no corrosive effect upon the heat coating....and the reason your ride feels sluggish id due to MANY factors not just this one......

 

SOHCArchangel: DId you see any gains from the wrap?

 

How far down should they be wrapped and they are ceramic coated.Would that coating be enough protection? And are the HP gains just from lowering the intake temp? You could fry eggs on my hood!

As far as the ceramic coating being enough protection I think it would be but then again there is no such thing as too much protection. About how far to wrap it I would wrap the whole thing all the way to the car. Remember heat rises and if you are trying to get a cooler engine bay well the heat from the rear most part of the header will most likely still rise up into your hood.

 

the power gains are not only due to decreased underhood temp, but the fact that you are insulating the exhaust , by not allowing heat to escape out of the exhaust, the hotter you can keep the exhaust the more flow velocity is retained and not lost to conduction/convection etc...

and yes there were gains, but i dont have anyhting on paper b/c ive never gone to he dyno

 

one thing I would thiny you would need to worry about is your exhausts ability to take the heat. Alot of the cheaper mufflers use crappy sound deadening material that might burn away quicker with the extra heat going through it.

also...if you still have the catylitic converter on your exhaust...the hotter the exhaust going through the tubes, the more efficient the cat...just my $0.02...and misa...how much power do you think you are throwing down?
